I must make a warning for those who plan to buy polishers .. Never use it under direct sunlight on a hot day.. You may damage the paint..So use it in shadow..
Also using diferent heads from coarse to finer with coarse to finer paste is necessary.. But which one to start with depends on the condition of paint.. :y
edit : buy the models with variable RPM ..and use always the lowest until you learn the job.. cheapo chinese made models have a short life.. so stay away..and always use clean or cleaned and wettish heads..

Any suggestions for a decent reasonably priced polisher??

THe meguairs g220 seems to get good results john not the cheapest though but it is a a dual polisher so oscilates as well meaning your less likely
to balls it up take too much off when you first start :y

Mines a silverline bought from amazon, variable speed so won't rub too hard, looks like a big angle grinder, those handheld polisher are no use as you need to put alot of weight on them to keep the bonnet from flying off, Silverline polisher £40 plus P&P amazon, sealey M14 compounding heads £10 each

Just to add.
never start with a coarse cutting paste, easier to do a test with fine and go coarse than start coarse and find it's too harsh.
be carefull using a buffer near plastics and rubber.
Be very carefull near the edges of the body work are like the edge of the boot lid, as the pressure you apply on a flat surfure wiill be greatfully amplified on the boot edge
Why, because t-cut and cutting compond are actually taking paint off your car.

for laquered metalics you need to constantly move the head (not fast) not burn the paint..
another important subject is minor scratches.. if its a bit deep you can use 2000 grid sand paper with soapy water but if you are sure of your paint thickness.. keep in mind even a scratch of 0.1mm depth is very deep and too risky for a beginner..
ps : plastic parts must be covered with paper bands..
Hitachi ( I use) , Bosch are good brands but not cheap though..

aye scratches showing metal are pointless and touching in is the best you can do on a budget, if you polish your car alot you can bet your paint is very thin, Be aware of past repairs to, as if not done professionally paint will be alot thinner than stock,
A magnet over suspect spots will tell you if you have a nice lump of filler underneath
