I also have a Landy Disco 1 commercial which I have sourced for my winter hack. It needed some minor welding for its MOT and it passed a few weeks ago. I didn't want to spend any real dosh on it until i knew it was sound (or as sound as an R plate 300TDi is these days...) and as such, other maintenance jobs were left to fester. Yesterday, that changed....
Air, oil and fuel filters changed as was the 6.5 litres of treacle that passed for oil. Steering damper changed. Rear propshaft rubber changed. Immobiliser immobilised (plug in chip doofer was broken) and a general tidy up and clean.
BIG difference. No more terminal shakes and shoogles when travelling about 50 and hitting a pothole. Starts cleaner. More poke ( again, as much as a 300 TDi is prepared to give....) then I discovered a potential problem.
The viscous fan had fallen off.
It was sitting nestled behind the radiator, gently kissing the crank pully and serpentine belt. Another shoogle on a pothole and goodness knows the mayhem that a chunk into the belt may have caused. Timing hidden on these (I think) but would still have been noisy.
Going by the chewing gum welds evident, someone else has already been in here to (nearly) fix it but, thankfully, these can run without the fan easily as long as an eye is kept on the coolant and its temp.
And seems like this was the release of the few extra horses. Bonus.... ;D

Good stuff H21.
If I can find a reasonable priced set, i'm considering putting a set of winter tyres on my spare wheels. Might just help a little if we have the same levels of snow here as last year..... Not a patch on the snow you have up there!

Um.. 300 TDI you can do alot with that lump. Did you know its a safe engine as long as you have a large hammer to straighten out any bent rockers, should the belt break. Dont forget the 0/30 oil.

Hasn't got rear donut bushes has it? :-/. ;)

Viscous. You know my views. If it does need that fan, consider an electric 'upgrade' kit, that will be more than suitable for the likely uses you will have with it.
Should be an ideal runaround for those cold, Jock winters :y. I know the earlier Discos are not as refined as the later ones (the original design brief was for a utility vehicle that was more usable day to day than a LR/Defender).
I'm sure you have access to some level of expertise/advice on what to look out for ;)

I had some all seasons put on when I was in germany for 50 euros a corner. They griped like a bugger in all conditions, were fantastic in the snow back in jan and were good wearing too. I am going back this winter to see a mate, stock up on Weissbeer and get some more of these tyres :y

Can they take motorway speeds in the dry?

Hmmm, something worth considering, seeing as I have a spare Omega. I can take the summer tyre shod one on nice days, and the winter shod one on shitty day ::)

I had mine throw it's aux drive belt and the
power steering was quite a handful! One foot on the dash to pull on the wheel. You get the idea? Might have been easier at high speed. Who knows? ;D
