Title: Don't look down, don't look down.
Post by: Searcher on 15 September 2010, 20:44:02
You couldn't pay me enough money to do this job.

I think my fear of heights just awakened....

It got me how he climbed without his fall arrester & only clipped it when he had a break.
I don't mind heights, but you wouldn't get me up there.

Don't do utube, but if thats the vid of the transmitter, then respect.  I used to climb telegraph poles, and some of the bigger ones of those used to leave me 'fully clenched'

My father when working on tall building when in the building trade used too tell me that walking across a 6inch plank of wood 100ft up was no different than walking over a 6inch plank of wood on the floor.

I suppose he was right but by god i used too cack myself watching him. ;D

Holy mother of mary........ :o

Don't have a problem with the height (I used to install cellular tx towers for a living) but really don't like how he only "clips on" to sticking out rungs, and stops without using carabiners or fall arrest equipment!!

Man has death wish!! :D

LOONY.

Why is it when it comes to heights, my 'little bits' twist and turn with my stomach :o :o
I am like TheBoy and used to climb telegraph poles during my apprenticeship and I have never recovered :-[

I nearly fell of my chair when he swung a leg back and looked down.......

Theres a similar proggy on Disco. where they climb the tower on top of Empire State building--at night--in the winter!

Done the Eiffel Tower, Empire State in New York & Sears Tower in Chicago, no probs but that "pole" no way.

Interestingly don't see the point in those guys wearing hard hats - wont help if they fell off from the top  :-/

All that, casually climbing up a pole which must be swaying a bit, possibly a bit gusty and with a few awkward bits to get round, with no safety catch and with a heavy bag swinging round?

break that!

Health and Safety.....gone mad!  I'm back with the Industrial Door business.  We have to wear hard hats when working in certain places.  We tend to be near the roof, so unless the roof caves in, the hard hat will offer no protection.... and even if I was wearing three hard hats, if the roof caved in, my skull would be in close proximity to my toes.

Friend of mine used to work as a roofer and was forced to were a hard hat by health and safety his argument for not "Only two things going to hit my head while up there bird s##t or a plane, so hows a silly yellow hat going to help"  :question

That'll be Winter Hill, looks a bloody long way up when you're stood at the bottom.

I changed some fittings once at the top of a 30ft mast on a boat for my mate.  Didn't think what the fuss what about until the git started running from one side of the boat to the other.  It might only rock gently down below but 30ft up it had me holding on :)

Even at deck level Jest., that 'gentle' rocking would have done for me.(http://(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick029.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Just a thought........................

IF he fell, there would just be a little red stain on the ground, and the drop in pressure in the head would kill him/make him black out before he hit the deck, would'nt it??

So.......St Peter would know about it before he did!!

Would there be much difference in atmospheric pressure between 1800 feet and sea level Six?

Sudden rise in blood pressure/respiration rate may have some effect on consciousness perhaps. :-/

Hard hat - trust me, it bloody smarts if you catch your scon on a step whilst climbing poles. So, yes, no help if you fall, but still useful ;)

Only about 40 mmHG differential; but boiling a kettle for a comforting cuppa would take longer at the bottom than from where he fell! ;D
