Just as a matter of interest, do any other OOF'ers partake in this hobby?
(Or is it just me, who's too tight to pay retail rates for a decent pint?)

I used to. I still have all the gear.
I have some Elder Flower Shampagne left, which around 18 months vintage now :y
I had good comments from those i gave some to (or maybe they were just being polite ;D)

I used to make loads of homewine.....carrot, rice, monkeynut and bananna, wheat, elderberry, etc, etc, etc
Bloody lethal stuff......hangovers like hell itself ;D ;D ;D ;D

I make my beer when I can be bothered too, in fact, I need to set a kit going this week...

I do the odd one now and again. If you're thinking about doing it, the importance of cleanliness can not be stressed enough! If it's not clean and sterile, you'll lose the batch. If you're doing it from a beer kit, it's really straightforward.
The only bad thing is, if you do homebrew, it's there so you drink it, whereas normally you might not! I would get steaming most nights, but strangely enough I wouldn't have any hangover! Due to alot less additives?!?! I don't know.
If you read about homebrew, and start to do your own properly, you'll realise that the mass produced stuff is no where near as good as your own, or the real ales you can buy.
After drinking your own, your old favuorite brand will taste like cardboard!

I have to agree. I make my own stouts on occaision and it is a lot stronger than any shop bought beers or lagers. It tastes a whole lot better, works out cheaper and indeed no hangovers.
There has to be something in mass production beers that adds to the hangover effect, preservatives maybe?
Although the initial outlay for fermenting bins, kegs, CO2 and other bits and bobs push the price up of the first batch, it is well worth the outlay in the long term.

I still brew my own wine, must make about 10 galls per year(approx 60 bottles), mostly strawberry, blackcurrant and blackberry from the soft fruits I grow in my garden.
Lovely stuff compared with the vinegar you buy in supermarkets nowadays and at a fraction of the cost. :D

Going slightly off topic but has anyone tried to distill their wine/beer into something stronger :P :D
and , if so, did you try to drink it, what was it like and more importantly are you still alive to tell the tale ;D

Did a fair old blast of that in times gone. Sold all the demijohns, heating plates, bubblers, etc etc etc and now use only the 3 for a tenner types from Asda/Morrissons et al. Easier, more convenient, but arguably, less taste.
It was a fair old bit of work though, to get 6 bottles of elderflower or whatever after several months.
Given recent consumtion tests, would have had to have had demijohns planked almost everywhere that I could get light or heat!
Had a few blasts into beer production and enjoyed it. Was a tad clenching when I overprimed a batch of bottles though. Lost a few but managed to salvage most. ;D

I've 'sampled' an adequate sufficiency of whiskies thank you Tony. It was my idea of a jest but, hey..... ::)
