Title: Should she wear a paper bag?
Post by: Nickbat on 25 September 2010, 13:19:20
I think the guy at the job centre was making a valid point. I wouldn't hire her looking like that.  ;)

Everyone is free and entitled to dress how they please. However, they are also aware of the reactions they might get and must learn to live with them.

That said, depending on the job, I don't think any of her piercings or tattoos make her "unemployable".

We'll never know, but in the eyes of many, the guy behind the desk could well look as big a waste of space as he considers this young lady!

Indeed HC, you have hit it right on the head there! :y :y :y

My background is retail management, and now I am, let's say, in official customer services and your appearance has to be spot on and convential for you to be taken seriously, and for your customers not to run away screaming!! :o :o :o

However, if you are on a production line, in a drawing office, or in a fashion design house, then you can look as "revolutionary" as you like.

She is employable, but it is horses for courses! :D :D :D ;)

I am glad you said that Lizzie. Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, there is still a thing in society called 'normality'.
We 'normals' as we call ourselves, still look upon 'abnormality' with, not necessarily with disgust, but with 'distrust'.
I, personally, would not employ her where one to one customer connection is part of the job. ;)
I do believe the majority of us still, even in this day and age, retain the opinion that an outward appearance of tidiness, cleanliness, etc give a good example of the quality we are trying to achieve in business :y
These are my own personal opinions, having been brought up in a society that did used to care ;)

She certainly is no Goth...  Emo perhaps...

There are plenty of jobs that she can do looking like that, just not in the retail, hotel, food industries...  Factory jobs, farm jobs, just nothing near a magnet...

Ultimately should come down t what she can do as opposed to what she looks like....  That said, I suspect that she could well be wanting to live the lifestyle of living on the dole..

That did make me laugh.. definitely wouldn't want to give her a job as an MRI operator, she'd be stuck to the machine  ;D

That is the kind of outward impression, sadly, especially with the "It's a lifestyle choice" comment.

Having said that, I work for a multinational IT company where a decent number of technical people are 'alternative' - tattooed up to the eyeballs, piercings, pink hair.. I suspect the moral there is - if you want to look like that, you better be sure you're exceptionally intelligent if you want a well paid job..

I'm one of those technical folks, but I'm one of the normal looking ones.. I don't think I could pull off the piercings, somehow (always quite fancied a tattoo, though - somewhere that could be covered up for meetings, however, not all over me!)

Hmmm --- I have a job with face to face "customer" contact. Currently have a near shaven scalp and a generous goatee (hairy a*sed biker style). OK my tatoos don't show, but the three rings in the one ear used to (removed them for an MRI, never put them back) .... never had any adverse comment from employer or "customer" alike.

I don't think a shaven head counts as marking you as a rebel these days so much.. I've been shaving mine since my mid 20's when most of my hair had upped & left me, and what was left was determined to turn grey..  ;D

Not so much a "rebel without a cause" ... more a "Rebel without the energy!"   ;D ;D

She is the epitome of Love's young dream! a vision of utter loveliness ::)

I can think of another reason why you might want to put a bag on her head , with or without the studs..

can we also have a rule on short sleeves with ties, man-bags, sandals of any description on a guy...with or without socks, also blue tooth ear attachments when you're just walking around - you look like a gay Borg  :y

until everyone complies with how i think everyone should look i'll not rest  ;)

oh, and wearing shorts at work in the UK just makes you look retarded  8-)

She will have a hard time getting a job in a client facing role as the staff portray the image of the company they represent.  That said if she worked in a tattooists..........

Employers have the legal right to chose their staff based on appearance otherwise I would shave and get my hair cut when I want  :y

Mind you -- getting all close and cuddly with 7 of 9 would be acceptable  ( though I doubt it would be going where no man has gone before !)
