Bought an ex cop 3.2 special saloon bout could of weeks ago. Needs a bit of work to bring it up nicely.
But have plans to mildly customise it late on.
Phoned a specialst insurance company up today, told them how I plan to customise it, but for now just want cover on the car in standard form as TPFT, but with 5000mile limited milage as it's not my main vehicle. And for now just want to drive it around and get to check all is okay.
Well to cut a long story short.
Standard car (listed as special on the log), but they gave me a choise of through as an elite or mv6, I figured it would be mv6.
I'm 43, no criminal convictions, clean licence, etc.
It's got factory security
It'll be garaged when not in use.
Was told as it's a 2nd vehicle, then I'll have to start off with Zero NCB, etc. And a few other things explained.
Okay I say.... Can you wait while I check they say.....
And the quote I got back was........

£1,200 :o
break !. Was looking around to see if I was on some Candid Camera or something !. Jeezz.... it's more than I paid for the car !! :-/ .
Fair play the chap did say, that the quote that came back on the system was absolutely rediculous before he told me... and said he was sure that he could get a much better quote by contacting the company personally to see what they say ? :-? .
Certainly hope so, otherwise the project may have to be sold, even before I get it off the ground if it's going to be that silly :'( .
Only other option is to get rid of my 2.2, and take on the 3.2 as my everyday car.
I knew the 3.2 would be somewhat more expensive on the insurance, but not quite that much !!.
I guess we'll see what happens next week when they get back to me ?! :( .

"Cough" classic car insurance? ::)

"Cough" classic car insurance? ::)
On a ~10 year old car?

Just about everyone gets 75% No Claims Discount. That would take it down to £300. You need to drive just one car, take your choice.

£280 for 7.5K miles Fully Comp on a 200BHP Westfield. :y
If you're going to drive a "Specialist" car it's worth going the whole hog. ;D

2nd car you say, I have just taken out a Multi Car insurance with Admiral, they wanted an extra £70 over my current renewall but it took £500 off Master Vamps Quote so a no brainer really.... :y

That's crazy money Mike :o
I'd try elephant.co.uk and tell them you're an antique dealer...as apparently that's a low risk occupation ;D

I tried Vamps advice on giving Admiral multi-car policy a try?. So went online to see what kind of result I'd get from it ?.
Very surprised, by it :o
For the 3.2 ex-police special, it came out at around £532 TPFT even with me stating Zero NCB's, and with it being fitted with lowered suspension, modified interior, and exterior changes (spoiler & non-standard grill).
Not only that, on my everyday car (2.2), fully comp, with occational business use, it came out with a saving over £220 :o .
Going to wait and see what the specialst insurance company comes back with on Monday, and if they can't do a good deal on the 3.2, guess I know where I maybe going ?!.
Josh,
Will try elephant insurance tomorow, & see what they say as well ?. :y
-
That seems a bit steep tpft!!
Have you tried Steevange Insurance Services? Had a few cars insured through them and have allways been really good value even with young drivers on the poicy o even worse no no claims!!
-
I am with Admiral MC Elite 3.0 amd 2.5 GLS (Full NCD Elite and 3years on GLS) cost me £430/470 ish the last 3 years, even though the NCD is getting better on car 2 the premium does seem to budge. :-/
-
all insurance companies are trying their luck with everyone, my mate's policy doubled on his polo (second car) from £500 on its first year to £1000 with a years no claims
his main car's a skyline
my insurance was £376 last year with 3 yrs ncd, renewal quote with an extra year was £831!!
managed to shop around and get it for £341

Push Admiral, I bet they will allow you to start the 2nd policy with at least 3yrs NCB - I managed to start my 2nd policy with 5 ::)

Must dissagree ... 3.2 Elite costs me just £245 a year, fully comp, me (59) & SWTSMBO (55). I have 11 years no claim .. she has just 4 as she wrote her car off a while back.... she has a "clean" licence .. I have 1 x SP30 (3 points £60).
The car has full Irmscher kit, LPG and a towbar .. all declared.
Insurer is Adrian Flux ... through Fluxdirect ..
http://www.fluxdirect.co.uk/
Might be worth a try ?
-
Agree with Entwood, although the age/experience of the driver will play a large part. Mine is with Saga (don't laugh! ::)) & I paid less than £180 F/C with Courtesy Car, & no extra for LPG conversion although it is covered. I also have an SP30. :y
-
Yeah, if you're older than the universe it's quite cheap :P ;) ;D ;D (I'm kidding.. kidding!)
Mine's some £750 with Adrian Flux (on the 3.2 V6 - it was £650 on the older diesel!), but that is with whatever NCB mirroring they offered me (the other car is with 'Flux too - all mods declared costs me less than the Omega!) - really rather hoping it comes down a bit next year.. but probably not..
Not forgetting that location can play as large a part, if not larger, than the driver himself.. heck, a number of specialist insurers won't even quote on Manchester, for example..
-
are you surprised? ;D

£1200! :o :o
I'm 26, have 0 no claims, 3 points on my license for speeding in 2008.
My insurance for the 3.0 V6 Elite with about 10k miles a year, kept on drive way over night, the car is standard, fully comp with business travel cover (not just commuting) - £600 with admiral
-
I'm 28, 4 yrs ncb, no points, no convictions, no claims, 3.0 elite (2000 f/l), 7k miles, on drive, £475, still bloody expensive though! (Elephant BTW)
I once paid £40 TPFT for 6 months for a 24v Senator! Beat that!
