Title: Kit Cars
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 28 September 2010, 19:51:36
As much as I like Kevin's Westfield, and the Chevy 350 powered Pheaton I mentioned a while back my heart lies with these, sleek looks and with the right power plant they can and will embaras most things with 4 wheels fitted, and probably a fair few 2 wheeled projectiles as well.

Sadly nothing above the 3500 rover shown, but have seen them with the chevy 350 fitted and even the Ford 427 Cu In

Ah yes.. one day I plan to build one of those :)

Although that's been a 'one day' for quite some time now!

A mate of mine built a Dax Tojeiro. Quite a nice kit. Just used a 3.5 Rover V8 with a Typhoon or Hurricane cam, IIRC, but with a pair of sidepipes that were slightly less efficient at silencing it than the standard fitment.

I still don't think I've heard anything comparable to driving that car through the Dartford tunnel. 8-)

Wasn't that quick, though. Big heavy car with Jag running gear = lots of iron compared to a Westfield.

The Dax 427 demonstrator was "a bit better", and I hear they have built a demonstrator with a Chevy 502 now. :-*

It's a pretty spectacular kit car that makes that much money. :o I suspect the seller is in for some disappointment.

Maybe not, but it's a replica kit car.. not an original Cobra.. (although the latter I suspect would be much more than £45k)

And they're not that rare - although I presume 'Gardner Douglas' is a name to be proud of, but: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?s=492

The Dax Tojeiro with camber compensation setup is VERY nice to drive.

And Cobra kits in the Uk have never had it so good now the Monaro is sold over here!

The Rover V8 is just not up to it, it will struggle to see 230bhp even with a hurricane cam, fancy exhaust and a bit of porting

Yes, but a profesionally built and setup car, fully chromed sutable for showing  would sell easily for that sort of money.

Now you're talking.. if that's a genuine 500bhp, it must be a hoot.

True.. I can't help thinking that if I was going to spend that sort of money, though, it'd be on a 993 Turbo (with ~£10k left in my pocket) ;)

Cant see the point in using any of the big blocks, there uber heavy.

LS1/2/3/7/9 would be very nice.

Even an LS1 is nicely tuneable with plenty of bolt on bits available from the US.

Engines and gearboxes available here

Easy enough to make 500bhp and its lighter  :y

I once went to but a Trans am 400, I was just chucked the jeys and took it for a spin, but there was an issue and it was setting off in 2md unknown to me and no matter how hard I tried there was no wheelspin on decent accelration and after the drive I felt we had been stuck in one gear.

The seller seemed disapointed so took me out for a spin. 70+ mph in 1st and 110+ in 2nd, so imagine that trasplanted into a kit car.

Plus a mate of mine had a 72 454 stingray and that was just a tyre shredder a gearbox mubcjer with the power that had and thats just short of 7.5 litres.

If I ever had a kit though I would be happy with a chevy 350 with arround 300bhp but masses more torque and depending on gearing  it drops in 3rd plodding along at 55mph at silly low revs.  ::)

Totally agree mark, a cam change alone makes a hell of a difference plus adding a pair of headers and decent side pipes, just fit an engine that has potential, which is why the 350, 400, 454 blocks are good and any of the LS lumps.
