...really is a tosser. He sees himself as some kind of union god. Surely he realises that Noddy could get what his members wanted if he could bring the capital to a standstill. I'd like to have seen him handle the BA dispute, Willy Walsh would have laughed him out of town.

I noticed that the unions at the Beeb are going on strike soon.
By pure coincidence at will be at the same time as the Tory party conference. ::)
Abolish the licence fee, make them hitch their gravy train up to the free market, and see how long it takes for someone to discover that many of them are freeloaders and the corporation can survive just as well with far fewer employees. ;)

as an aside:
let Rupert and his demonspawn run it ;D
my Sky Bill (approx) : £30/month = £360
BBC license fee: £143
with Sky I watch primarily BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC News with a little Sky News and Gold thrown in.
For comedy: E4 (well the Daily Show anyway). Comedy Central, oh and Fox News, obviously.
away from TV BBC radio is rarely off (mainly 4, 5 and 6) plus the excellent Beeb website :y
Personally I'd rather give the Beeb £360 and Rupert £144, I guess I quite like having a massive, independent broadcaster not beholden to commercial interests - I'd go freeview in a heartbeat if the wife didn't watch so much garbage on Sky :y
and back to the thread:
Anyone and everyone, Albs has the right to withdraw labour surely? I don't support every strike, but I support the right to strike, and Bob Crowe, as an old school leftie seems more popular than ever with his members....so whats the problem?

Engineering in TV broadcasting has taken up quite a bit of my life and although I was ITV, the BBC was always viewed with high regard. Lately, however, their technical standards are falling at a rate of knots. There was a promo on this morning for a Panorama coming up and the sounds levels were atrocious. The transition from an engineering-based service to a media-lead one has got ahead of itself. And its all about money. >:(

I certainly agree with that. The lusts for market share/dominance and the need to be at the forefront of media dispersal, along with political interference, have all conspired to devalue to worth of the state broadcaster.
Should anyone wish to evaluate how undesirable some of these factors can be in a broadcaster, look at Sky/Newscorp?

You're right enough about the withdrawl of labour BJ.
Insofar as the 'old school lefties' are concerned - have they any place in today's labour movement.
Such pig-headed, power-crazed, politically motivated (nakedly so) and self oriented leadership all but did for the country – and the workforce - in the recent past.
If this particular man is lauded by the union membership, then we all have a right to be concerned.

The point is that you have a choice wether or not you pay Rupert. I would like to be given the choice wether or not I pay a tax to the BBC just to have the right to watch my own TV.
If they are willing to allow me not to pay the licence fee on the condition that I dont watch any of their left wing dross programmes, then I am happy for them to broadcast as many hours of propaganda as they like.
I noticed recently that the director general Mark Thompson - admitted that the Beeb has in the past had a left wing bias, although according to him it no longer does. ::)
As for the right to withdraw labour - employees should have the right to withdraw Labour, but employers should also have the right to dismiss them if they do. Otherwise its not a level playing field. I also think that there is a good argument to be made for public servants - anyone who is paid from taxpayers money - not having the right to strike at all. they are supposed to be public servants after all.
I certainly balieve that the govt. should presently be introducing new legislation to tie the public sector unions in knots before they try to bring the country to its knees in the near future.
If Crowe really is more popular than ever with his members, that to me demonstrates that his members are far to stupid to be allowed to make decisions for themselves. Although I suspect old Bob worked that one out a long time ago. ;) ;D

I'm sure certain elements in the investment banking sector are doing very well.
Now that they have had their turn at trying to destroy the country through carelessness and greed - along with the mortgage providers, estate agents, property developers et al - it's the turn of the workers (as manipulated by a cynical trades union leadership) to have a go.
However, this time around it seems that the path to destruction has been paved with purposeful intent, a factor that puts an entirely different complexion on the matter.

In my experience the left are very good at generalising about all sorts of things everything has to be black or white.right or wrong for us or against us etc. Greedy spiv bankers being the latest example of this. I am probably wasting my time, but I will tell you a true story about a greedy spiv banker which happened about a month ago.
Greedy spiv banker(GSB) had been in the office from 6am. Had an extremely busy and stressful 14 hour day, Couldnt face the crush in the tube, so even though it was raining, decided to walk home. On the way home GSB saw a homeless man sitting on a doorstep with his dog. The man was plainly crying and had a look of despair on his face.GSB sat down on the wet doorstep in smart business type clothes, pu their arm around the man and asked him why he was crying. The homeless man went on to tell his story of helpless alcoholism etc. and how he wished he could find the strength to do something about it. GSB listened sympathetically until he had finished and then left. GSB returned a few minutes later with a large burger and chips, a pack of dog food and gave the homeless guy some money.
GSB told the man they would rather he didnt spend the money on booze, but also wouldnt judge him if he did.
It didnt sort his problems but when GSB left him he was smiling,
He said it made him feel part of the human race again. Most people wont even look, and if they do they do so with a look of disgust.
The fact that someone stopped and took the time to show they cared meant a hell of a lot to him.
Bankers- greedy pond life the lot of them, should string em all up. blah blah blah.::) ;)

If you control billions upon billions of other peoples money - it's really not that difficult to make money, if you make up your own rules its even easier - like shooting fish in a barrel unless you're a complete moron so spare me the deification of the bankers, I agree, for once with the Archbishop of Canterbury calling for a moral and ethical core in business - 21st century and we still haven't figured out that profit and the bottom line isn't the be-all and end-all - I find it depressing that humans as a race have no ambition other than to chase small green pieces of paper - aren't we better? shouldn't we be helping everyone not letting half the world starve? :o
what am i thinking? ;D
chase the money - thats the only way ;D ;D ;D
oh - and remember - avoid tax, thats only for plebs ::)
-
as for bank accounts - the post office surely could run all our day to day banking needs, saving them from closure in the meantime?
building societies handle mortgages and home loans.
the bankers can play at the casinos to their hearts content.
8-)
OK thats that solved - whats next? :y

I concur with BJ..
In 1997 New Labour was so keen to show the city that it was business friendly......Blair and Brown allowed the banks far too much freedom...... They trusted the banks to behave in a responsible way... :'( :'( the end result being that all the cooks ..... cleaners and people on a low wage or even minimum wage are likely to have their meagre standard of living cut in order to bail out these greedy (and inept :-/) parasites. Any Government should distance itself from the banks and the city...New Labour was far too cosy with them. In the thirties FDR made a speech with words to the effect......"The banks are unanimous in their hatred for me ......and I welcome their hatred"...(Youtube clip?)..FDR had the right idea.... :y :y :y :y

Zulu - I detest work-shy spongers as much as the next man, but I'll guarantee there are far more tax avoiders than benefit fraudsters costing us a hell of a lot more in lost revenue than a few million pounds worth of giros ever could :(

Ye Gods, you do have an excessively simplified view of the world. Much of the world's malnutrition is down to one thing: politics. It's all very well and good shoving money at destitute countries, but it invariably ends upon the pockets of the few. What they need, indeed what they want, is help to build their economies, to achieve higher standards of living and, most importantly, to achieve a feeling of self-worth and pride.
And the tax question is secondary, unless you want the government to take even more and fritter even more away.
You seem to forget that the rich actually provide income. If you force, in your Marxist paradise, everyone to have an equal income, there will be much less incentive. Furthermore, niche industries (of which there are many) which cater for high-earners would collapse, so that chap down the road who installs luxury swimming pools for a living would end up down the job centre. Production workers at Aston Martin would be laid off as everyone would be forced to buy the government's Banjax Mk I (available only in black). ;)
The make-up of our society is far more complex than you seem to think and the strands of our economy are interwoven. If you pull one out, you will witness the law of unintended consequences, which could be severe.

Jesus Nickbat, I have a simple view of the world and yet any slight criticism of the banks and our priorities in the west and I'm immediately daubed a loony left radical! ;D
If anything I'm showing you depth and nuance, money can be a great motivator , it can be used to leave lasting legacies as some of the more advanced rich are beginning to understand - free market capitilism is the best system we've got for us, but its far from perfect and it astonishes me that you think we can't do better :o

I have never before seen the words "small group" used on these boards when bile is being launched at the banking sector. Yes, as in all societal groups, there are a few inept and dishonest individuals, but the anti-capitalists on here seem to enjoy tarring everyone with the same brush. Furthermore, the problem the UK faces at the moment is excessive debt, which was cause by an inept and greedy socialist administration. >:(

Only joking Albs - I'm sure there are thousands hundreds dozens a couple more examples of the caring side of bankers on our city streets :y
sniff.....makes me proud that we bailed out this noble and much malignant maligned hard working section ::)
My daughter.
Having read the rest of the recent posts in this thread it has been a reminder of why I try to avoid posting in threads which you and your sidekick are involved in.
You are both stupid beyond words, I must try harder in future not to break my own rule

Albs.....If your daughter has chosen to go into banking then that is entirely her prerogative......but your rather bitter posts seem to suggest that BJ and I should not be allowed to voice a negative opinion on a small group of greedy inept bankers who......in my humble opinion.....and the opinion of many others have left this country on it's knees....Try not to take things so personally..... ;)
Hmmm yes Nick ......you seem to have fallen into the same trap as Albs......that is ....if you don't believe in totally unregulated free market capitalism( which I don't)...then you are some sort of rabid commie/marxist...who hates business and enterprise...a man who has no aspirations or imagination...For the record I own a detached house and I'm self employed....We have seen with the banks just how dangerous unfettered capitalism can be.... :y :y

No one said that anything about no regulation. Remember that, by definition, capitalism means private ownership of the factors of production. What you're talking about it is the open market, whereby goods and services are freely traded. Obviously, there has to be some regulation to keep matters in check, but what Banjax was talking about (e.g Post Office running all current accounts) was, in effect, anti-capitalism. He would want the free market in financial services to be closed down and replaced by a quasi-state-owned one. :(
If you are genuinely in favour of private enterprise, I am pleased to hear it! :y

sorry if I'm being a bit thick here, but don't banks - and we're talking investment banks here, don't they just make money for themselves by creating debt for others?
how is that useful to society? like I said maybe I'm being thick but I can't see the purpose :y
oh, and far from being a firebrand commie - like Opti i'm a self employed home-owner - I am a capitilist - I just think we're led too easily down a path that the banks want us to believe to preserve their profits and fuel the economy. I think it's high time we saw what the banks can do given a little squeeze, welcome their hatred as Opti says :y
