Title: Question - Penertrating oil.
Post by: Auto Addict on 03 October 2010, 08:51:05: My local source for Plus-Gas has dried up, look like he's gone bump.

I know TB uses WD40, but is Halfords own penertrating oil any good?

Is it better, worse, or no different to WD40?

It works very well and is noticeably more effective than WD40....for stubborn stuff, I heat the bolt/nut with a gas torch before applying the oil to help it wick-in and have been known to make a 'bund' out of plasticine to hold the puddle of penetrating-oil in place on the part, overnight.

Plus Gas is a Dismantling Lubricant enabling easier removal of rusted nuts and bolts.

WD40 is a water dispellant primarily with lubricating properties.

Penetrarating oil is as its description - a lubricant that is thin and penetrates.

Post by: TheBoy on 03 October 2010, 10:08:28: I do use WD40, as its dirt cheap from Costco, and it is great for cleaning the black exterior plastics ;D. Its also good for removing smiley faces drawn with a permenent marker by Pinky/Countess/Zok on my wing >:(

I have a one man campaign to avoid the motor factors in town, so other than Halfords, the only other place thats convenient only sells (other than WD40) Loctites version called Freeze and Release. Andy B topped up my depleted supply of Plus Gas.

WD works OK if you have the time to spray it on, then can leave for a while (often repeating). Plus Gas and Freeze and Release are a bit more instant, though I always end up using loads to free up each seized nut. If these don't free it up, I tend to give it a squirt of WD, and have a cuppa.

WD40 is also great for cleaning dirty tools ;D ;D ;D

Found out since my local factors always keep 1 can in, "not many people like it, but those who do wont use anything else" he said.

Just been to Halfords, looked at that, but settled for 3:1 penertrating oil, saved a £1 a can with my trade card, which works out cheaper than Screwfix.

I think the biggest problem is that people use WD40 for everything and dont know what Plus Gas is really for.
