Over the past couple of years i've been on a mission & that mission was to pay my mortgage off early.
Well as of yesterday that's exactly what i've done.
I've put in extra hours at work, worked away as much as i could (get extra for that) & it's all payed off for me :) :) :) :)
It's a really good feeling to have.
I've had to sacrifice holidays & other things that i would have liked, but now i can do all these things & while i'm still youngish (43)
I would advise you to do the same :y :y
I'm gona save for a big & very fast toy next :D :D :D :D & enjoy that whilst i'm still youngish ;D ;D

I suspect they'll put me in a hole in the ground (after wheeling me away from my desk) before my mortgage is paid off..

well done pete, time to relax now then and enjoy your life. i have no morgage, nice council flat. 90 a week. ive come into this world with nothing and i shall go out the same way. :y

At present.... our mortgage is roughly £950 each month....before the interest rates were reduced it was £1400.. :( :( ....It's little wonder I can only afford a shagged out Omega... :-/ :-/

I hear interest rates are about to rocket Opti. The bank of england base rate could be as high as 7% in a year.
If you need to sell quickly, I will look upon your plight sympathetically. ;)

As some of you may recall, i've been layed off twice & you could be wondering how i've acheived my goal!!
Well i had savings that weren't returning anything like what i'd liked & so i payed off a lump, i've chipped away at it as much as i could, the more i payed them the smaller my payments got, but i kept increasing my payments & giving them extra that i've earned.
It's supprizing just how quick it all happens once you set your mind to it :) :)

As some of you may recall, i've been layed off twice & you could be wondering how i've acheived my goal!!
Well i had savings that weren't returning anything like what i'd liked & so i payed off a lump, i've chipped away at it as much as i could, the more i payed them the smaller my payments got, but i kept increasing my payments & giving them extra that i've earned.
It's supprizing just how quick it all happens once you set your mind to it :) :)
I know exactly what you mean Pete. It almost becomes an obsession.

Mine is almost 50% of my salary - granted I could reduce that by moving somewhere smaller (like back to a 1 bed flat) but a) I like my space and b) I live in the hope that one day there might actually be the rest of a family to live with me.. (Ok, you can all stop laughing now! :P)
Still when the fixed rate period ends and if the interest rates have skyrocketed, I'll be breaked.

I think I worked it out to 46% of my post-tax monthly salary.. it works out less annually when you factor in the money I sacrifice into the share scheme, quarterly bonuses and share allocations.. but it's still a fair whack. (It's more like 35% if you include everything I actually end up getting over a year)
It'll still be a bit sphincter tightening if the interest rates hit what they did in the late '80s!

I've been out of work for 2 years, which has scuppered my plans. I think my wife has got a couple of savings accounts, with a few thousand in, earning absolutely nothing in interest, but I can't persuade her to put it towards the mortgage. She's keeping it for our old age.
She doesn't seem to have noticed that we're there now.
We're going to lose the house before long if she doesn't se the light. :( :( :(

That's exactly what i saw too, i did the maths & thought there's no point to this & so closed the accounts.

Congrats. I'd love to be mortgage free but my modest 3 bed semi with workshop costs less to buy than rent & a months mortgage payment equates roughly to a weeks net pay so it's not too bad. A few years ago i had a handsome inheritance when my Grandmother passed on. I frittered most [not all] of it. My parents are now elderly so will get some more in the next few years which i will use to drastically reduce or clear the balance.
I know that may seem a little callous & i am in mo means waiting for them to die, i'll be mortified, i'm a real Mummies boy & love them both dearly. Point is i'll use thier inheritance in a more constructive manner then have something to leave my son when i shuffle off.
