Noticed my desktop is doing a suspicious amount of network activity lately. I am up to date with virus definitions, but don't have any adaware type software.
What is the best of the free stuff at the moment?

I tend to occasionally run the Malwarebytes one...

Try Hitman Pro, it's not free but you get 30 days trial. Worked well on a rootkit that my director picked up last week, it uploads anything suspicious to a cloud based scanner.

Just noticed the new freebie AVG (http://free.avg.com) has a malware scanner.
No idea how good it is though...

Auto updates? There are a lot of them around.

spybot is also good as well :y

Its good to have an arsenal of them, as some do not always pick it up. Though don't have loads installed and interactively scanning, as they will trip over each other.

What is AntiMalwarePro?
The Malwarebytes research team has determined that AntiMalwarePro is a fake anti-malware application. These so-called "rogues" use intentional false positives to convince users that their systems have been compromised. Then they try to sell you their software, claiming it will remove these threats. In extreme cases the false threats are actually the very trojans that advertise or even directly install the rogue. You are strongly advised to follow our removal instructions below.

(And plenty of other places seem to agree..)

I once used Spybot search and destroy. Would never use it again. It caused untold problems that not even a computer hepline or AOL could sort out. I managed to sort it myself eventually - don't know how!
I just keep things on my pc to an absolute mininum now and never download anything unnecessary, especially free or gimmicky software etc.
Also, be aware that certain spyware/adware replaces windows files with themselves, doing the original job and its new spying job. Then when you come to get rid, an element of windows doesn't work.
Some spyare/adware is also used by companies to directly target you with sales popups to try to get you to buy the 'solution' to the problem. Which of course you have to pay for! Should be illegal IMO.

Cheers all - I will give a few of those a try.
SAV has just picked up 2 Trojans, so I think my suspicion was right. I had already done all the normal updates, there was just too constant an amount of traffic for my liking.
Hopefully, it will get sorted, or it will be time to trash and rebuild! oh Joy!

I've used it for a number of years and never had a problem! Just shows what works for one may not work for another.
