Title: MOT out of date!
Post by: PhilRich on 07 October 2010, 21:33:07
Flippin' eck! i've just checked through my paperwork as I knew the MOT was due this month. It was......on the 2nd! :-[ :o
No excuses, other than i'm going senile :-/ I can't get it into the testing station I always use until Monday now (Local Council Testing Station). With my luck I will almost certainly be pulled this weekend as not using the car is not an option i'm afraid (don't ask, it is too long & boring). Can anyone tell me what the current penalty/ies are/is for no MOT please? :-? Thanks, Phil. :y

As it will likely invalidate the insurance, its likely the car will be seized, and you'll get a ban.

Really do consider taxis, leaning on friends/family etc.

£60 fine and smile nice at the copper don't say you knew it was out of date that will piss the officer off.

No points and mighty unusual to get a pull for the no insurance aspect, however if you were to have a smash (god forbid) then your insurance company will more than likely reduce your cover to third party :y

If you can avoid it phil do so ;)

EDIT ~ The fine could be upto £1000 :'(

According to everything I could find; a fine of up to £1000 but no points & no disqualification, and the insurance company cannot invalidate your insurance but can sue you to recover their costs after the fact..

Well a mate of mine if ever he is caught in a situation the same as yours, and he has the MOT pre-booked if he is pulled over which he was twice out of around 15 times he's done it, if he gets pulled he drives to the MOT station and hands in his keys or puts them through the letter box. If he doesn't get pulled, he gets to where he is going.

Personally I wouldn't risk it mind you.

This week is the first year for ages that I have actually got the MOT done before the old one ran out!  And it sailed though with only an o/s wiper blade as outlay.

Someone ought to run an SMS service for MOT reminders.

Apt.  My Girlfriend had an Accident in March, I was a passenger in the car.  Some Turkish guy (nice bloke, very helpful and admitted liability in the first instance) pulled out of a side road, and hit her rear quarter.  It wasn't until I went through her documents that it was noted her MOT was 9 MONTHS out of date.

Maybe it was because she was the innocent party, but the Insurers didn't ask for anything.  Car was written off.  I bought it back for £48 and MOT'd it.  CAT D.  She is still driving it today.

It's only a 98 Pug 106 1.1.  Suits her commute, suites her needs.  I rather hate it.  ;D

Strangely enough, the local garage I use, sends me a reminder a month before the MOT runs out, and usually encloses a voucher for a few quid off as well!!
Very thoughtfull, especially as both our cars almost always sail through  :y  :y

Pretty risky to drive round without MOT....but I can't be holier than thou, last year I found my MOT expired (and I'm not talking by a few days) about two days before I was committed to driving my family and two friends to the French Alps...

A stressful day followed but sure enough the ticket was duly obtained....and blow me down I found myself in the exact same position a year later when it was time to drive the crew to Wales.

I guess some people just never learn...

I think many of us have been there, tax I get a notice to renew, insurance the same I think there should be a reminder. The system is all computerised now so should be easy enough to set up...... :y

In Northern Ireland MOT stations are government controlled and reminders are sent out around 6 weeks before the test is due.

Appointments can be made in person, by telephone or on-line.

Any work required to be done as a result of a failed test must be carried out elsewhere as these stations have no affiiation with any garage service or repair facility.

A very sensible system that should be operated here on the mainland in my view.

I agree, that sounds good to me, totally fair and no taking advantage of customers who have no idea of what is going on..... :y

I remember some years ago taking a Rover P6B for an MOT and it failed, needing some welding done :'( I accepted this and took the car to another garage that specialised in welding. They asked me where it needed it, no yellow markings :question I took it back to the MOT station where it passed with an apology..make of that what you will.... >:(

This year, the AA sent me a letter saying my MOT was due in a few weeks, and trying to sell me some sort of product/service that would ensure it got through.

Can't remember the details, as it cost money, and I therefore binned the letter before reading all the way to the end. :) :) :)

How did they know?  :(

having said all of this... the mot is only good the day it is done and the car could be defective for the other 11 months and 3 weeks so the £60 fine sounds right to me.

As far as I can see, you could have it done today, there are lots of places that do it while you wait. So, you are choosing to break the law and, as such, should be banned. :y

Modern MOTs have a peel off sticker that you are supposed to stick somewhere as a reminder.

Obviously, designed by a civil servant, so the stickiness goes after a few months, and the sticker falls off...

And you can't make out the date because it's scrawled in crayon.
