Title: Oil stained tarmac.
Post by: Richgm on 08 October 2010, 18:56:51
After my recent discovery of a deceased oil cooler I've now ended up with oil/water (mayo) stains on the drive.

Anyone got anything they recommend for getting rid of the stains without melting the tarmac?

Thanks

Rich

More of a question than a suggestion, but I wonder if neat swarfega would work with a stiif brush? I contemplated using it.

There was a thread on this ages ago, someone tried cat litter, although I can't remember what type sadly.

I've had quite good results with washing powder just pour on and brush in to remove/dry up oil and then use a strong washing powder/water solution to clean the stain.

Cat litter does work quite well on monoblock.  Pour a fair amount on then tread and scruff it heavily in with your feet and brush it up afterwards.  Can and does also lift the patina of the brickwork so my be worth widening your taget area to lightly clean alsewhere as well to fade it out a tad.

Gunk do a path cleaner, I'm not sure whether it's suitable for a tarmac drive though.  :-/

I have found that gunk and tarmac dont get on too well, longer term.

By design, gunk dissolves oil and, likewise by design, tarmac is oil based......

As said, longer term....   ;)

I remember it being mentioned last year instead of salt for sorting snow/ice on paths.  Also ebery one concluded was a total mess and waste of time.

Pour neat Fairy Liquid on the oil patch and just leave it to soak in for a couple of days, when you get some rain the oil will dissapear, guarenteed!

There will be a man passing sometime today in a beat-up flatbed. If you ask him nicely, he will do you a whole new drive for £50 :y
