Right,
I finished work at 2, and I though where better to go than a breaker and pull off a gearbox for my Elite. I'm breaked off with driving it around in limp mode everwhere and I want it working, so I'm willing to risk a box change.
It was really easy to remove the box. First off, used my fancy new jack and stands to raise and support the car. Worked a treat. Kept the jack on the front crossmember for additional safety.
2 x 15mm's - 3 x 13mm's per side, and then cats were out the way with no fuss.
Removed starter motor (2 torx bolts accessed from engine bay, and pulled that clear)
Removed the 2 x ATF pipes, and immediately looped them over, making a loop on the car, and one on the box, sealing it up.
Removed all electrical connectors
3 x 19mm's and I had the propshaft removed from the coupling (and hence gearbox)
Supported box with an additional jack and bit of wood
Removed all of the bellhousing bolts that I could see
Undid gearbox mounting bracket, 2x 15mm's and carefully lowered. It wouldn't come away for love nor money
Secured box again to car
Checked bellhousing... Woooops.. missed a bolt at the top centre! Undo bolt.
Release mounting again and lower a bit.. give it a yank, and .. CLONK.. one gearbox on the floor ;D
Pulled it out from the front, then lowered car back down again
Chuck it in the van, drive it home. Along with the crank, and cam sensors
I will remove the sumps, check inside them, and clean/reseal before the box goes on the Elite
Although I didn't remove it in the strictly correct manner - I can now see the hatch to get at the torque converter bolts for when it gets re-fitted...
All in all, a productive afternoon.
And it's shown me how easy it should be, to change the boxes over :y
Watch this space for Friday!

Great job so far james. All I can say about how easy this job is, is GRAVITY. It works very much for you when taking a big lump of metal off the car. Going back on however is another kettle of worns altogether!

I'm thinking of putting the hydraulic pallet trolley under the car, and resting the box across both it's legs, to help me lift it up to the engine.. i've done this on a rear wheel drive bedford van, and it worked a treat!

Can i ask a question?
It may have been covered and i have missed it....so apologies if i have.....
I have seen your threads where you say what g/b ecu codes you are getting....
Question is....
Are you sure it isnt the engine ecu asking the g/b ecu to go into limp mode.....coz the engine ecu isnt happy about summat??
Just it seems a bit odd to me....that g/b was fine until you rebuilt the engine.....now its going into limp mode all the time :-/
Just thought id ask.....coz i hate you to change the g/b and it makes no difference :(
PS ive sending you a PM about summat else entirely different :)

PM replied to, TD :)
When all this has been happening, Tech2 didn't pick up any reason why the Engine would ask the gearbox to limp.
In addition, Mark spent hours, and very thoroughly tested the gearbox electrical system.
And on top of that - there was a bloody great thrust washer in the gearbox sump, not to mention a rough change anyhow.. so we now know the existing box IS mechanically not well, and it NEEDS to be eliminated from the troubleshooting :)
So for the sake of a mornings work, I may as well change the box I guess, seeing as it won't cost anymore than my time
Also - I could do with the experience of V6 gearbox changes.. one thing i've not done yet...

ok....but in another post you say you are getting crank sensor error.....would this ie put the g/b in limp mode? :-/

James, when you come to fit the new box to your car, unbolt the torque convertor and fit it to the new box before offering the whole lot up. Messrs McBurger & Laidback Autobox Fitters Ltd seem to strike lucky and get the splines and dogs to line up with the torque convertor still attached to the drive plate but I think fiddling with 6 lightweight torque convertor bolts is much easier than trying to persuade 14 ton of gearbox that it wants to engage with the splines whilst balanced on a trolley jack.

That is a very recent code... the gearbox issue has been going on a lot longer..
