Title: Car Lifting - Question for Mark in particular
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 07 May 2007, 13:25:58
I've just bought THIS from Machine Mart:

And THESE

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cax-3tbc-3-ton-axle-stands

A) Mark - is this jack and stands the same as the ones we were using at your place?

B) Will this do for removing / fitting gearbox?

Anything else I might need?

£85 spent so far.. but it's a long term investment, and I really do need these, so why not...

Those are not the same stands Mark has if they are the 6 tonne ones (which they look like) they are the same as mine. The jack is the same as Mark and I have.

You will need a second jack really. It can be done with one, but is NOT a one man job due to the potential danger of the box slipping onto you!!!

Me and Laidback have done 4 of these jobs now. Trust me, it is easy and the stands are definitely right. Just try and get another jack the same. You can borrow mine by all means, but it is a long way to come for it!

EDIT* just read the ad, they are the 3 tonne ones. Just as good, but I do prefer the extra height from the 6 tonne ones. If you can change them.

I have the 3 tonne stands, and if I had to pick a fault, the V bit doesn't fit the chassis rails very well...

I have the 3 ton ones too, as TB said, they don't fit that well, i find the Y bit to deep and the car on rests on the inner edges...

As for a Jack, sorry James i need a replacement one too as mine is kak.

They look fine, I find that bigger stands get in the way to much.....but its down to personal preference.

I bought the 6 tonnes stands too but my 25 year old trolly jack doesn't quite lift the car high enough to get them underneath - I ended up using bits of wood on the jack to give that extra little bit of lift. :-/

Even ramps are not 100% safe, my dad knew of one give way and collapse, the mechanic underneath was changing a gear box and saved by that jack. The box punched its way throuh the floor (aluminium).
