Title: Couple of computer questions
Post by: Tony H on 07 May 2007, 19:14:26
Hello everyone, as title I am having a problem with my pc. The sum of my Knowledge regarding computers can be written on the back of a stamp so go easy with me please. first problem is on this site across the top of the page where it says Home ,Help, Search etc,has changed recently. Now all I get is the words and a series of boxs with little red crosses in them. I also noticed that when Google put Google maps on its homepage I could get it to run perfectly now all I get is a number of boxes with "sorry we do not have imagery at this level"and again the dreaded red crosses in boxs. I've tried changing the setting on the Google site with no joy :( I'm wondering if the problems are related. :-/
Problem number two is I've just tried to log onto Autobahnstormers site and was unsuccessful. logging on requires using a keyboard character which is a 0 with diagonal line through it I dont appear to have this on my keyboard. Sorry for sounding thick, thanks in advance

sounds to me like your internet security settings have either become corrupted or have been reset to high?
what anti-virus software do you run?  oh, and have you changed any settings recently?

There is a way to get the ø character using the ALT key and then numeric keypad, but before going into this I don't think this is what you need... usually when a password has the O with the slash, it is just computer jargon to emphasise that the O in questions is actually a ZERO and not the English letter O. So if you use 0 (zero) in your password you should be OK.

I am sure that with patience it is possible to fix the settings that went wrong on Internet Explorer, but if this is too daunting then simply download the free browser FireFox2 from www.firefox.com .

Try the usual cache clearing techniques.

The 0 with / throught it is just a 0.

And moving to chat section, as nought to do with Omegas ;)

When in Internet Explorer click on the 'Tools' menu, then 'Internet Options...', then click 'Advanced' tab. Scroll down to the 'Multimedia' section and ensure you have a tick in the box for the 'Show pictures' option.

I don't know why this would be unticked, but it's worth a look.

how often do you run your system's maintainence programs? disk cleanup and defrag?

its recommended you do this once a week, this can avoid files getting corrupted

also, try searching for an updated version of your internet browser, see if that helps

Or do as Markjay suggested and ditch Internet Explorer for another browser. But forget Firefox and get Opera. Quicker, safer and easier to use than IE or Firefox :)

until web designers have the brains to design for other browsers, stick with IE.  Believe it of not, less critical flaws than Firefox.  Opera still too unreliable.

Yes.... but: my IE7 dies a death every now then, so I switch to the backup FireFox which works for awhile until it too dies a death, then I re-install the PC and the cycle starts again...
