Title: Fast Yamaha FS1E in Oxford Area
Post by: YZ250 on 21 October 2010, 18:47:27
I was travelling down the A40 towards Oxford today when I passed a Yamaha FS1E that seemed to be going extremely well so I slowed down to pace him. He must have been doing about 60 mph with his head down over the clocks which is well impressive for an 'old' 50cc moped.
It had the racing seat and expansion chamber and when we slowed down to about 45 mph in traffic he had enough poke to blip the throttle and raise the forks (not a wheelie).
I had a 'fizzy' as a teenager and seem to remember that it did about 50 mph on a good day.
This bike must have been played with to go so well. Possibly a donor piston/barrel set-up like they use to do with 50cc Gilera fitted with the 150cc engine bits.
Ahh, memories of our younger days. ;D ;D :y

When I was 17 ( recently ha! ha!) all my mates had FS1E's, I inherited from an uncle a Honda C90 stepthrough, they all laughed, not when I left them for dead, I could get 68mph on the clock. Great machine and economical. :y :y

First bike was a proper pedal fizzy, never got 60 out of it though. Fizzies were usually quicker off the mark than AP50s but the Ap's usually had a better top end.
Then i bought e new fantic cavellero, de restricted it...carb/exhaust & it peed over all the Japs & was fun off road. 8-)

Most mopeds had tuned speedometers ime, and the more people filed the ports and messed about with the exhausts, the slower and noisier they became. They sounded a lot faster though.
I had a slightly different approach to going faster when I was 16. Flew round outer East Belfast on a 750 Norton Commando (among other things) until I got caught. I thought about doing a runner but Mr. RUC man had a sub machine gun in his hand as he was asking me questions. ::) ;D ;D
Had 7 court appearances and 12 convictions by the time I was 18. Had a hell of a job getting insured, and had to pay through the nose. Insuring a Chevette HS at 19 involved being extremely economical with the truth on the application form. ::)

It was a bit more modern than that. ::).........saw off many a CB750 and Suzuki kettle. Brakes look very similar though, better to try and dig your heels into the road. :y ;D

was the same as this (Dunstall Norton) but in Black and Gold.

Those alloy/hydraulic disc/expansion pipe fissies look pretty good. I bet they are worth a lot now

It was definately a fizzy. One of the early yellow and black ones. The set-up of it was very similar to the first photo posted by DLK but the back light box was much squarer.
What brought back memories was the distinctive smell of Castrol R in the Two Stroke mix. ;D :y

If he'd spent that much time & money on it i doubt he'd be running it on castrol R or TT. Back then we used to run them on sachets of bel-ray synthetic. None of the quids worth of 2 star & a 5p squirt of 25 to 1!!!! :D

These were also a bit special. Not quite as mental/scary as the 500 though imo.

My mates just fully restored one of these. Apparrantly quite sought after. The fork tubes were hardest to source as they were rotten so he had new ones made and chromed. There is a Garelli forum as well. ( Opti, why are you a newbie again?)

What the heck is a 'Fizzer' ?
The FS1-E was known as a 'Fizzy' or 'Fizzie' (A play on the model designation No. FiSzz1iE.)   :y

4.8bhp .. crikey, I don't think that would even move if I sat on it  :-[ (unless it was down a very steep hill)
