Having this discussion at work today, not sure how it cropped it but It came to the point of discussing the time I was pulled over by the polis for a routine check.
I as i always have when ever i have been stopped, stayed in my seat with my belt on, switched off engine and wound window all the way down.
I was instantly asked to step out of the car. the rest was routine.
Was I right to do so? I thought so as it would clearly show that I was wearing my belt incase of the reason for stopping me.
My workmates think I should have got out the car, but then i tought of police videos and police usually getting alarmed by a driver jumping out.
anyone know the correct proceedure? so I can put this to bed

I would say ...
stay in locked, closed windows, secured car, engine running, belt on.
When approached, ask and verify ID, mobile call to local station if needs be (lone women esp) .....
Then open window for further instruction as to belt / engine / stay / get out etc.

I was always happiest when people remained in the vehicle.

A driver getting out of his car can be seen by the police as possibly being confrontational! It may also indicate that you do not want them to see inside the car, or smell the interior, and check on passengers along with the general situation.
It is always far better, and safer on a motorway or major road, to stay in the car and wait for one of the officers to approach you and make their request on what they want you to do or not. ;) ;)

Ive always opened the window turned off the engine and kept my hands on the steering wheel until the plod has made eye contact.

whos to say they arent armed robbers, who have kidnapped the real police and now want an innocent looking car to continue their getaway...
or SimonOmega etc on here in a full liveried replica pretending.. ;D ;D ;D
FYI the Met police have bought all the old The Bill uniforms to stop them getting into the wrong hands...
all that said, if its a fair cop and ive been playing silly buggers, i'd be acting all meek and mild, and not at all argumentative / untrusting...

Yes, it's incumbent of the officer who stops the vehicle (where vehicles are concerned) to control the situation and instruct the driver and passenger/s of vehicle as to what they are expected to do.

Having recently lost vrtually all respect for the police lately, I think I would follow the advise to stay locked in the car wth the engine running and wndows shut and demand from them the same information they want from me.
Sorry to sound off, basically someone commts criminal damage, there are 3 witnesses, the polce say they will not be taking any further action. criminal is 25 year old home owner. I thnk they would rather be issung speeding tickets. (I still have clean licence) >:( >:( >:( >:(

I am unimpressed with them currently.
Traffic is priority no 1 over con men and nutters following lone women
BTW I used to respect them but all the Policemen I respected have retired

Might be dependent on what they pulled you over for, if they think you are going to let it or get abusive I can understand them asking you to get out of the car.
I have only ever been asked to get out of the car once, speedo cable had just snapped, no idea of speed as no rev counter and the cops behind me, so drove slower than the cars 200 metres in front of me. Byt had a massive bout of sneezes so my head was going up and down as I sneezed. :-/ Plod pulled me overand imediately asked me to turn the engine off and get out. When they asjed why I had slowed right down I just said regards the sneeze attack, and said I couldnt pull over for which they agreed it would have been awkward but accepted my appology and explained they thought I might have been high on something. ::)

Pull over, engine off, window down and stay in the car, watch them approach and wait for them to address you. If you get out of the car they may take your actions to be potentialy "confrontational" and will only ask you to get back inside. Besides, in the current weather its much warmer and nicer inside the car! Got pulled a few weeks back and must say the officer was as good as gold. He stopped me because Id left my front fogs on (Id gone through a quite foggy patch just prior to being stopped but forgotten to turn front ones off :-[) and I was doing just over the 30. As it was about midnight and I was driving home from work and visibility/road conditions were now good and its not a residential road he actually stated that he couldnt say I was driving dangerously but that I was over the speed limit. Pointed out how he'd saved me a £90 fine and -as seemed contrite I suppose-let me off with a comment of caution. Cant say as he couldve been fairer really. Doubtless there are other officers who wouldve taken a different stance but , as I say to managers when Im representing union members in disciplinary cases sometimes , just because you can take such and such an action doesnt necessarily mean you should.

they dont pull me over never been pulled for years for a traffic stop
so they would normaly not stop with out calling more cars if they have run the index before pulling car
got a fair few pnc warning on me from years back
had a row with one that got goby one night and layed him out
and have had a few more rows when i was much younger
dont think other cops like him much eather as he was there duty sargent
and they prity much kept out of it
and claim they never saw me lay a hand on him seemed more that happy he got a royal pasting
trust me he was asking for it
and a few more a couple of year back when they tryed to to fausly arast me for looking after my un well wife
and idioted 4 of em in the process
then tryed to fit me up for slaping them
of course Iwas found not guilty ie no case to answer was self defence due to therm making a fausle arest
i fact iv still got a on going case where were sueing them for it and for asulting my mrs that was ill at the time
it take a long time when you sue the plod
so i prity much wouldent piss on em if there on fire
if they behave i will if take the piss i slap em

from my bike days, engine off, get off bike, remove helmet ready to converse politely.
shows your not going to leg it, and they can see who you are and commuicate with you....
....so in the car i do similar and get out the car, cant leg it, obviously they are going to want to talk to you, and any serious conversation will take place in thier car, esp in poor weather, saves them time and effort and just shows cooperation i guess.... :-/

On the rare occassions that I've been pulled over, I've always stayed in the car and wound window down. The police have never asked me to get out apart from when I was a witness to an RTA whereby I had to get in the traffic sergeant's car to make a statement.

i got out and confonted them 2 years ago, they just followed me for no reason, i even when down a side turning off the main rd. when i asked them what they wanted they said my car had been reported as stolen. so i called him a f'ing liar. and reached for my phone to check this. they backed down and apologised when they found out who i was. they were from the same stn as my cousin who is pretty high up now. works everytime ;)

i've only ever been pulled over once, i stayed in the car, belted, hands visible, until asked to get out
decent chaps they were aswell, followed procedure properly, didnt talk down to me or anything, but then i was completely respectful to them
one thing i always wanted to do though if pulled over again is jump out the car and lie face down on the floor with my arms and legs out ready to be hauled away just for entertainment!

I used to be pulled over every time I travelled from Rosyth to home & the same the other way. Three times one night. Something to do with being young and driving a MKIII Cortina. At least I could only get pulled for driving a Cortina these days! ::) ;) :y :y :y

If you EVER get pulled over in the States .. DO NOT get out .... or you will very quickly be looking down the active end of a loaded and cocked gun. It is seen as a VERY aggressive action.
Engine off, window down and rest BOTH wrists on top of the steering wheel, await instructions.
I use the same "technique" in UK... and as the officer approaches .. "Good Morning Officer" ... :) I used to be stopped pretty regularly as I travelled to work anywhere between 1 and 3 AM.
Polite and non-aggresive.. "who are you, where you going, thankyou very much sir... have a good day" .. why be confrontational.. they are only doing what we pay them to do... :)

i was all legal
so one day there doing the following thing
i took em on a misty tor of the Lady bitsry lanes theres one i knew that gets narrower and narrower winding away to tarmack runs out and is a dead end for cars that get too narrow for a car and big ditch eather side
cue me coming back round the other way watching the farmer towing there cop car out they got stuck

You say that but on one of the Police, Stop tv programme thingies the other night they stopped a bloke driving a decked-out ambulancy thing (Astra van IIRC). He waffled about being a prop for film sets, and all sorts but he had made the mistake of putting his blue flashers on. His car was full of cut up paramedic uniforms etc. He was a nutter (my view) but had been spotted lurking around a hospital.
Not nice.
