Title: Calling all Londoners
Post by: STMO123 on 08 May 2007, 20:00:51
Cockney rhyming, I've always loved it.

An easy one to start you off:

'Allo me old china - wot say we pop round the Jack. I'll stand you a pig and you can rabbit on about your teapots. We can 'ave some loop and tommy and be off before the dickory hits twelve.

No, Markie, you've got it all wrong. London is such a sh*t hole these days that all the Londoners now live in the home counties. Every taxi driver I spoke to down there lived in Kent/Essex and drove in every day.

Thats pretty good for a Manc Danny. :y

Hello my old mate (china plate) - what do you say we pop around to the bar (Jack Tar). I'll buy you a beer (pig's ear) and you can talk (rabbit and pork) about your kids (teapot lids). We can have some soup (loop de loop) and supper (Tommy Tucker) and be gone before the clock (hickory dickory dock) strikes twelve.

There's Northern ... then there's Wigan-ese! Or even worse/better from just down t'road in Leigh (pronounced Leeth??) eg Yes = Yar   hungry = Clempt???  :-?  :-?
I've lived (almost) all my life in't North but having recently started work in Wigan I'm still learning a whole new language ;)

it's more "layth" i think

i got a lot of mates over in leigh, worked in wigan for about 5 years, promotion took me to leigh for 3 years, then being dumped by my girlfriend made me want to get out of leigh like it was riddled with infection!!

working in bolton now!!

the common wigan (and surrounding areas) accent is no joke though, the rough ones talk like they have toilet roll in their mouths!!

Slightly off-topic...

When I get visitors from abroad, it can be quite difficult to explain how er do things over here. For example:

- Why does this restaurant say fully licensed? Do you have restaurants that operate without a license?

- No this is not a license to run a restaurant, 'fully licensed' means they can sell alcohol.

- I see... so this corner shop over there that says 'Off License' does not sell alcohol then?

- err... no. 'Off License' actually means they do sell alcohol....

Another one:

-      Why are we going to this Pub when the one across the road says ‘Free House’?

-      Errr… no it’s not free… it’s to do with the breweries… I like this one, it better because... never mind, I’ll buy if that’s a problem.

And another:

- Why are you checking the train timetable to Leeds?

- Because I want to see the Leeds Castle.

- err.. this is actually in Kent. It is just called the Leeds Castle.

- So why is it called Leeds Castle if it is in Kent?

- Donnow... that's how they do... as you know Buckingham Palace is not in err... Buckinghamshire, it is in Central London. And Blenheim Palace is not actually in Blenheim... Blenheim is a forest in Germany...

- I see... well I also wanted to see Edinburgh castle, where might that be then?

- Edinburgh Castle? Why, in Edinburgh of course....

You cant be over and out.

You are either waiting for a reply (over to you) or you are (listening) out, not expecting any direct reply.

Yes i'm currently doing my Yachtmaster practical (weather exam tonight) and will be doing radio/ DSC operators course in next couple of weeks
