>:( just submitted my gas and electric meter readings on line, low and behold i'm £ 156 in credit !! funny how they always owe me money, never the other way round, how many millions of pounds do the energy firms have nicely stashed away of our money?must be a nice earner on the interest for them >:(

Yep. Been there. >:(
Oh, you're building up credit to "help out" during the winter months. "Did you know, you use much more gas and leccy during the winter...".
Yes, thanks for pointing out the bleeding obvious. If I wanted someone to "help out" or to lend someone money, I'd lend it to someone who pays interest, thanks. >:(

Presumably someone signed-up to a Direct Debit that takes fixed amounts each month. It's bound to happen.
My mum uses them and they automatically send out a letter if they think the credit has got too big and automatically credit the entire amount to your bank account.
Yikes! I'm nearly defending Scottish Power. :D

As I'm presently stuck in a 'delightful' country area mains gas hasn't made its malodorous presence felt just yet.
The electricity provider operates a simple system however; someone comes out every quarter and reads the meter. (Or I do it and send the result back on-line) A bill for the required amount appears a week or so later - job done.
The arrangement described by the OP simply benefits the energy provider as the consumer is essentially giving them carte blanche to take funds for a service not necessarily delivered at the time of payment demand.
I would consider this to amount to a very unsatisfactory situation. (As is charging people more if they elect to opt for payment methods other than Direct Debit – à la BT)

they have recently lowered my monthly figure from £123 to £98. i hope they dont put it up again now winter is here.
the quarterly bill never used to be a big deal years back. the massive increases in costs now mean scary quarterly bills.
yes money in there pocket, but the quarterly scare is no more.
