Harriet Harman, the Labour Deputy Leader made the following remarks at the Scottish Labour Party Conference.
"Many of us in the Labour Party are conservationists and we all love the red squirrel," ... "But there's one ginger rodent we never want to see in the highlands of Scotland - Danny Alexander." (Chief Secretary to the Treasury )
Was this a racist comment???
Harman has now apologised for this statement.
As an Historian I cannot help but compare these comments with the work of the Nazis Propaganda Minster Goebbels portraying Jews as rodents! >:( >:(
-
I don't know about ginger rodents .... but claiming to love the "red squirrel" sounds distinctly dodgy ::)
I have no wish whatsoever to know what Ms Harman gets up to with her red squirrel!
Lizzie -- I doubt there was the intelligence behind the statement to put any deeper meaning to it than a smart alec remark, made, as is so often the case, without thought. I do it all the time myself :-[

She is, without doubt, almost as obnoxious as the rest of her party. ;D

Spot on Steve! ;D ;D ;D :y

For me I think this Racist Card is being shown far too often..

Lets hope none of the ginger people in Scotland ever vote Labour again. :)

sorry, but can you please explain to me how this could remotely be viewed as racist?
offensive, maybe, rude, certainly, but HOW is it racist? there's no racial implication ANYWHERE is that quotation.
calling someone a rat, is not racist.
commenting on their hair colour is not racist.
Ginger people are NOT a cultural or racial division.. they merely have ginger hair ,although granted Giner hair is more common in Celtic regions, and families descended from such places, but it is by no means exclusive.
it's no more racist than using the "Dumb Blonde" type casting attitude.
i'm not saying it's necessarily "acceptable" in terms of manners/ public comment in the press etc.... but it is NOT racist.

Thanks for your opinion Max, and that is all I was looking for! :D :D :D ;)
I have not said it is racist to comment on a hair colour or comparing someone to a rat, which I have done on many an occasion!! ::) ::) ::) :D :D :D
Just wanted to see if anyone was offended by this comment, which for me just touches on those awful Nazis images mentioned. I have also encountered people with red hair who have become very touchy and offended upon mention of their hair colour, so just wondered how this latest comment went down ;) ;)

Would like to mention, my best friend from school till this day (30+ years) is ginger. We have made fun of each other for all those years, I have mad fun of his hair and he has made fun of my nose (large)
No harm was ever meant between us. But boy if someone else made fun of either one of us they hab both of us to answer to.

Sorry to go off tpoic before Lizzie.
And yes certain labour politicians do have a way of using nazi ways.
I try not to comment to much on political posta anymore, to many arguments.

Any comment about anything is ok on my threads Manta, as I do the same on others in true OOF fashion! :-[ :-[ ;D ;D
As for your second comment, I completely understand as I myself have greatly restricted my comments on here for the reasons you state 8-) 8-) 8-) :y

I concurr wholeheartedly, being someone with more than just a smidge of ginger in their background.
Ms Zoom, I would suggest - nicely ;) - that your comment comparing this individuals comment with Nazi/Jew, from a historical standpoint, is no more than planting a germ of a philibustering nature, if not simply mischevious.
Racist it most certainly, in my opinion, is not.
Ill advised, quick of the lip and subject to being ravaged by wolves with an alternate agenda, it most certainly is...

Hotel21 I was asking a simple question as a History & Politics student when I opened this thread, hence the multiple question marks, to seriously guage what a straw poll of people (on the OOF) would take from Harman's comments. Yes the Nazi issue was linked to see if anyone felt any connection with this type of comment by a politician, who is no less the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
Harman's comment were actually NOT quick of the lip, off the cuff, spur of the moment, but where drafted in a previously prepared speach which was handed to the media. This all made her comments doubly interesting!
Once more the question marks I thought emphasised the fact I was asking a question, not making a statement of fact on "racist" comment one way or another. The fact I was asking a question I also spelt out in a further posting to MaxV6.
Once more I find that I have to defend a thread or comment I have constructed in an adult manner to you Hotel21. So what is the problem when I, and so many others, have witnessed very childish threads being allowed to run with insults and unnecessary language being thrown about? Can we not have serious Adult threads anymore?
Don't worry though Ht21, I have already restricted my input on "serious threads", and will now be even more careful.

Harriet Harman is English, Danny Alexander is Scottish. I actually believe the 4 peoples of the UK are a lot more alike that any of us think.
According to my surname I should probably be Welsh.
[/highlight]
According to mine I should be Very Very Rich indeed and a member of the English Aristocracy :y, & also the most copied nameplace in the Country ;). Unfortunately, someone is masquerading as me and I am trapped here in a poor Northern suburb of a town a little less appealing than Wigan! :'(
(With abject apologies to all who live in Wigan! :-[ )

Once more I find that I have to defend a thread or comment I have constructed in an adult manner to you Hotel21.
Meaning??? :-/
I construct my responses in a childish manner?
I do not think through my responses?
Your comments are bigger than my comments?
You added the Nazi/Jew option, thereby implying racist in the extreme.
As you say, your initial post was to guage response to a situation. My reply was to counter that.
We appear to always butt against each other and I for one (almost) always refrain from replying to threads and comments by yourself of a similar nature. Sometimes, as said previously by yourself, some comments strike a chord. Yours did to me.
If my response caused offence, it was not intended. Adult discourse I welcome, thowing up a defence of past indescretions, however imagined or interpreted, I disagree with.
Like yourself, I shall henceforth refrain from using OOF as a platform for experimenting with political interests and intrigue..... :-X
-
I have to agree with H21 on this. Yes, they were vile comments (hardly surprising given the speaker), and may well have been crafted beforehand, they were not picked, I feel, for any WW2 connotations.
Thoughtless comment by a thoughtless woman, IMHO. :(
That's about the long and short of it. :y
-
hmmmm treating someone differently because of how they look.............so red hair is the least common colour then somehow thats to be the defining characteristic?
how often do you hear "black haired tv-presenter..." or "brown-haired footballer....."
making fun of someone because they have a different hair colour merely perpetuates the myth that this is somehow OK when clearly it's not :o

Very Sorry Hotel21 :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
I have woken up this morning and now feel my response to your comments were unnecessary and exagerated. I haven't had a good couple of weeks and I have been in a right mood!! :-[ :-[ :-[
I was trying to do the things I stated with my thread but your response did 'trigger' something like "I can say nothing right for Ht21 off!" Yes we do seem to come up against each other (well that my take on it!) every so often, but I know it is a distorted perception for an unknown reason!!
You are a good guy contributing to the future of the OOF, and I know that :D :D :D :D :D ;) You are also an ex-traffic cop, so for me that is even better! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Sorry anyway Ht21, a near day and a new perception eh? :D :D ;) :-* :-* :-* :-*
