Now I have heard everything.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/8104190/Prisoners-to-get-vote-the-European-court-ruling-Q-and-A.html Mrs Varche and I tried to think of anything that prisoners don't get and couldn't think of one thing. (Open prisons before anyone says freedom!)
This sort of thing makes my blood really boil. I knew I shouldn't have watched episode1 of "Coppers" last night. What an eye opener that was. Known criminals being arrested repeatedly and clogging up the cells. One guy demanded to be taken to hospital for drugs as he was coming down(as was his right) two cops tied up accompanying him rather than being available to solve or stop crimes. Easy solution . Boot Camp on somewhere like the Isle of Skye. Self sufficient community where the prisoners work for their needs rather than costing us taxpayers £40,000 a year minimum. Three strikes and they should be automatically sent to my boot camp without rights. They forfeited those by repeatedly behaving in an antisocial manner.
Rights my arse. Try telling that to someone needing drugs to extend their life or someone denied due to cost.

World gone mad. And the EU want another 6% to enforce this rubbish.
I vote prisoners, from petty theft to murders, are used as live target practice for the army....

They've got no guns, of course, but I suppose they could tie them to the side of an oil rig and ram them with an aircraft carrier (with no aircraft on). ::)
Sorry, that'd be the Navy I guess. ;)

From what I have read the European court have decreed that it must happen, so the UK "government" have no choice but to introduce it. >:( >:( >:( >:(.......and Cameron had the audacity to refer to this country as a Sovereign state today - when he was explaining why he has just signed a 50 year deal with the French, for joint defence of both countries.
Maybe we should send them the bill for the last time we defended them, and then we could afford to defend ourselves. ;) :D ;D

give em the vote......
And wish them well on their attempted visit to the polling station ;D
(i know, I know about postal votes ;) )

I thought the whole point of being in prison was having your "rights" removed.
if you ask me some of them shouldnt have the right to breathe never mind vote.
I wish I could jump ship and go live in some other planet.

Jaime...Target practice? even for minor offenders? Bring on the hanging judge. I somehow imagine you've maybe had a scrap, driven home after one too many or something along those lines many years ago when we all did stuff we no longer do? Had you been caught you might 've got a short stretch, they used to dish them out alot more liberally than they do today. I did 2 short sentances for TDA (as it was called then in the early 80's) i deserved it & did'nt complain but i've been a good boy since then & had you have the army shoot me you 'd have missed out on the joy of my company today!! ::)
That said in early 1983 as a 19 year old borstal boy i asked if i could vote & was rightly told no & still feel this is right.
To hell with human rights. I've been on both sides of the coin & if you get yourself locked up then you forego said rights, end of. ::)

I can’t necessarily agree with that Vaux. The point in sending people to prison - as far as I can see - is to satisfy the forfeit decreed by law as a result of their wrongdoing.
It may surprise some here (in light of my calling) that I'm broadly supportive of this move - although where long-term prisoners are concerned (15yrs+ say) I can't see the sense in it.
In the overall sense however this really isn't the issue - what is, is the inability of our sovereign (for the moment at least) government to prevent such directives being enforced here.
This bears much more scrutiny as we now appear to be subject to laws formulated by a body within a group where we have little say and no direct sanction at the ballot box in cases where we disagree with them.

I think it would actually be quite interesting adding the 100k+ votes of the prison system. Considering how gang members & repeat offenders for drugs money (mostly non-voters) and white supremesists (BNP and the like) are the majority of that figure I think it would make general elections more interesting for the main 3 (read one) part(y)ies.
-
It could also be said that many of the politicians braying for the vote are that corrupt they should be locked away themselves.
Redress that balance!!!!! ;D
-
I wonder if Ken Clarke new this was coming when he appeared to become all warm/fuzzy/friendly to the criminal fraternity ?
Or is that just too cynical ? :-/ ::)
-
They get the vote an more luxuries than most people :-?
If they vote for a certain party do they get a reduced sentence :D Am I paranoid or is there something going on - Who says crime doesnt pay??
-
Bring back labour camps! Get them working, working for the right to come back into our great society!
-
Reckon they could do the roads and other work like in america
-
Yeah, as long as it didn't compete with decent honest people earning their bread. We could just have them breaking rocks, or moving a big pile of rocks from one place, then back again.
-
Send them in the army. As of Jan 1st 2011 all repeat offenders are sent in the army, and trained up (approx cost to taxpayer 40,000 pounds, if memory serves/the same amount it costs to keep these sods in prison for just 1 year, the army training is a one-off cost, remember) and get them out the the scummy countries our finest are getting blasted to pieces to try and sort out.
Can anyone find me a system of rehabilitation/education that turns these criminals who vandalise OUR cars, break into OUR homes, sell drugs on OUR streets, into an educated, capable human being; skills like engineering, people skills, logistics, tolerance for others, smartness and respect, better than HM Armed Forces? There is no college course, no University, no prison, or young offenders free holiday scheme that can turn this-
Layabout criminal scum
into this-
Bally hero, fighting for his country.
-
Great idea in principle, but for too many reasons to list it's a non starter, and the army or any other of our great armed forces haven't got the time, money, resources or inclination to sort these miscrients, residivists and nerdawells out!

Postal Fraud indeed...
F*!king Europe, Sticking their F*!king noses in again where it F*!king well isn't needed!!! Human rights!! How dare those prisoners claim human rights when they breached the human rights of the person(s) they deprived of posessions/life//right to live in a safe environment!!!
I say stick them on the aircraft carriers (without the planes) and make them take flight of the end of it!!!

As much as i want our great nation to be entirely independent of Europe, I don't think it's Europe sticking its nose in, it's our leaders (loosely used term) who have sold us down the river and not given us a referendum. Remember Eire, the referendum? A big no vote, so they wanted another one until they got the right answer 'yes'.

How do you know when a politician is lying?

A lot of us are quite clean - worst thing I have ever done was speeding (and got points).

Sorry Guy but totally clean, have an 'enhanced Police check' to prove, if you need to see it, have to get a new one every 3 years ::) ::) could not do my work without it.... :y

Looks like it's just me then. What are the odds on that?
I still don't believe it, c'mon, fess up! ;D

I had lots of driving related convictions as a yoof but didnt get any criminal convictions. It was pure luck though. I did quite a few things that could easily have resulted in a bit of time at her majestys pleasure. I am ashamed of them now of course, but I would imagine a fairly high proportion of young males do such things.Teenage angst and all that....
I dont believe in the "use them for target practice etc" argument.I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, but I have no time for habitual and/or very serious offenders.
I dont belive in prisoners being allowed to vote though, although I also dont believe in the long term unemployed being allowed to vote either.
No representation without taxation - to turn an old saying on its head. ;)

Thankyou. I only did silly things but got caught. No good at petty crime so gave it up @ 20 yrs old & clean as a whistle ever since. Mugs game & i deserved what i got. I just wanted to hear i'm not the only one who has committed certain crimes that could've resulted in a stretch should they have been collared. At least one other has come out of the woodwork to show i'm not alone!!! :y

Precisely. :y
Our leaders for whom being a cabinet minister, Chancellor, PM, etc. is no longer the culmination of a long career in politics as it was before the European parliament, but merely a stepping stone to the land of milk and honey in Brussels, always have their eyes on the next career move. That means not sticking their head above the parapet and representing the views of their electorate but toeing the EU line and not burning too many bridges. That's why we are so weakly represented in Europe.

Me too. With a great deal of experience with the criminal fraternity I believe that they expect others behave as they do, and begin to think criminality is the norm!

Any body can make a mistake once But in my local paper its always the same names/offences in the name an shame section
