Title: Vegetable Oil
Post by: Darth Loo-knee on 10 May 2007, 16:52:51
A bloke at work last night was asking if i had heard if Diesel cars could run on Vegetable oil.. "Well i have heard yes but i will have a look on the internet for ya!"

So anyway I found this site
http://www.ravenfamily.org/andyg/vegoil.htm

I wasn't sure if it was against the law to use Vegetable Oil but according to this site its not.

Is anyone on here or you know using it? if so what does it run like?

If diesel cars do run ok on veg oil won't be long until the goverment jump on it like they did with Gas..
30 pence a litre around here when we thought of converting Mrs Loo-knee's rangey, now it is about 48p....

Biofuel ( to give it its correct name) is legal and does work. But it is NOt just a case of throwing cooking oil into the tank. It has to be refined and additives put in with it to blend a mix over a period of days. Very complex and a waste of space. I have had an Omega diesel running on literrally chip fat. It was hell and I converted it to normal diesel after which it ran as normal again.

When you make biofuel you are supposed to calculate the tax and pay it to IR. There are many sites telling you about this. do a search in google UK for biofuel and you will find out more.

There was an article I think on 5th Gear a year or so ago with a guy driving an old Merc across the country on chip fat.   Seemed to go ok from what I remember,   even did some 'performance' testing at an aerodrome.   I think you are supposed to calculate the equivalent duty and give it to Gordon (or whoever else it will be soon).

A mate of mine runs his people carrier on it, he has a bit of a production set up with his mate.

I also heard that Asda lorries run on something like this biofuel

I ran my 406 diesel on veggie oil for thousands of miles

you just need to make sure the veggie oil is VERY hot before it reaches the diesel pump

I used a heat exchanger, that took heat from the coolant system...

It's totally legal, if you declare the tax on each litre of fuel you use...

Only Bosch diesel pumps are tolerant to veggie mind... if you try it on a Lucas/CAV pump, or a BMW engine forget it.

My wife's uncle runs his Disco on 50% veg oil, 50% diesel.

He even has a little filter setup on his garage wall to remove the bits of batter from it!
