Not really the place in the help section so I posted it here.
Doesn't make the noise on first start up from cold but the auto choke is on so a higher rev.
So Imagen the car has been stood for a while with the engine running and the fans kick in to cool it down. When the revs increase as the fans kick in the sound I can only describe as a 'screw in a china bowl' starts.
Not only does it do it when the fans kick in but if running normal and just feathering the throttle.
Attached is a pic highlighting the area of where I believe the sound is coming from.
Any ideas?

STOP USING THE CAR!!! You need to get the cam belt cover off and double check everything is tight. Last time I heard a noise like that one of the cam belt follower bearings had collapsed and I'm sure the last thing you want is for it to collapse and bend all your valves.
Sorry to sound all doom and gloom but you really need to check it out before any major damage occours :y

But just before doing that^^^^ get your head underneath & check the exhaust & cat heat shields havent worked loose! :y

By all means check the exhaust first but a loose heatshield or loose cat wouldn't cause a rattle in the area you've highlighted on your picture :o
-
i had a noise from that general area, it turned out to be the tensioner pulley

that's the area I think its coming from or sounds like its coming from, a bit hard to tell with the engine running.
cambelt is due in 10K miles.
the aux belt and tensioner have been replaced 5K ago.

I'd be getting it done now for piece of mind. I'd rather spend £200 on getting the belt done than spending close on £1000 to get the heads rebuilt and re-fitted.
-
sure i have seen someone on here that does it for £200, so i'll have to arrange the visit.
not sure if he does the tensioners though, unless that is provided in the kit?

Yes the kit includes the tensioners.

Is this by Vx's reckoning ? Their intervals are somewhat optimistic.

Are we following the corrected service interval of 40k or 4 years for the cam belt kit? Or the original 80k interval that had a few failures due to failed pulley/tensioner barings?

You should drive a s.k.o.d.a. mate ... bloody things rattle all over !!!!
BTW ... I wrote it with the dots to fool the word filter -- I know it censors out naughty words.

:-?
This is a request for assistance/suggestions regarding a mysterious rattling sound on the car.
That's most definately one for the 'General Help' section. :y
Wait for the sound to start then try a shot of something like WD40 on bearings on the belt and fans, one at a time, and run the engine before doing the next one. If/when the noise stops, you'll know what's causing the problem.
