A reminder for anyone interested in History, the Great War,  or aerial photography:  BBC1 at 2100 tonight!

Unique archive film and newly developed photographs show some of the affects of total mechanised war.

Watched it, some shocking scenes and stories. Also the lady who saw her father on film for the first time looked so much like him

thanks for the heads up Lizzie-just watched it on i-player. very good and a reminder yet again of the human losses and horrors of that war. As jonny said, the story of the airship pilot (who enabled the filming of the desolation of the western front months after the end of the war) is equally moving as his daughter watches him caught on camera and sees her father for the first time since she was a baby.

An absolutely riveting documentary that showed the horrendous results of trench warfare.

It does indeed show the horror of total war, but as always, the true cost to humanity remains incalculable.

Any of you watched "Beneath hill 60" yet? If youre interested in the Great War its one you'd like. Wasnt really until I'd read sebastian faulks "birdsong" that I was aware of the important role miners had at the front line. The Great War always holds a particular interest  for me because I was privelaged to meet some of its veterans many years ago  and hear their memories of those terrible years, of the fear, bravery ,humour and horror. Always makes you think how you would cope in such circumstances-and be very grateful that you havent had to.
