For what? It is superior for some tasks, and inferior for others.

Simply stating its superior is like a gayPhone user stating that a gayPhone is the best phone.

Bloody fanboys :P

Always the case when style is a higher priority than function ;)

Mac does have some niche areas where the packages are more usable than Windows equivilents.  It also has other areas, for example, journalism, where users are too stupid to learn different ways of doing the same thing, so traditionally stick with Macs.

Says he who owns two iPhones?

RE: Laptop. It's screen failed, opened it up one morning LCD split, was fine previous day when it got locked in storage. 4 HP laptops in our team, this was the 5th hardware failure... One of them is on it's 3rd hard disk!

You don't work for The Gadget Show do you?  They like to abuse laptops and stuff in an extreme way.  They put a china plate in a laptop bag and (amongst other things) repeatedly slammed a hatchback's boot-lid on it to see if the plate got smashed.  No real consistency in the levels of abuse so pretty unscientific.

I wouldn't decry HP on the basis of those failures - sounds like poor treatment to me.

Mac+'s

Reliability (Hardware)
Stability (software)
Lower cost of long term ownership (support calls, virus software, etc etc)
cross platform interoperability.
Length of support availability.
ability to run apple specific packages....

Mac-'s
Initial purchase cost
PC Vs Mac debates ..
Hatred by those convinced that anything better built, and prettier is by definition some sort of con.

aesthetics are irrelevant.

I have never, ever claimed them to be the 'best' or 'unbeatable', and for most people who ask, I would NOT recommend one

HP make neither screens or harddisks. They use the same as everyone else.

I'm not going to stick up for HP Laptops, even though we have one each, and I use one for work, but they are no worse (or better) than any other from a reliability point of view, be it Dell, Quanta, Apple, Tosh, Lenovo etc.

A crack in the LCD that is not early life failure can only be caused by distress ;)

We'll debate stability all day long, so lets just agree to disagree on that one :y

But for the minuses, you forgot the Apple lock-in, coming to a Mac near you. Very soon.

If you saw what I do to them, you would be surprised how robust they are. Then other times, catch it just right, and you get the telltale marks. Apparently ::)

They ain't that robust. One of the screen hinge screws came loose in my DV6000. I didn't notice and opened it. It has cracked chunks out of the LCD lid and bezzle, the plastic is so thin.

The DV's look pretty but the whole mechanical case design is a mass of silly plastic clips, screws and hidden fixings.

Sony & Dell laptops take a lot more hammering, I had Sony one for 4 years over Uni, that got carted around everware, backwards and fowards to home every week, countless USA trips chucked in Over-head bins in airplaces, never missed a beat! HP laptops come across as has very fragile  :-/

My previous MacBook Pro survived having 25Kg of suitcase land on it end-on .. though it did gain a slight dent on the corner from one of the pop-studs inside the laptop bag.

Heartbroken, I was. My fashion accessorylaptop was no longer perfect..

I find HP laptops are hard, Dell are ok for 6 months then bits rub off, screens become loose. Acer are by far the most awful laptop company that I have personally ever come across, HP I have to say are the best by a good distance for me  :y And Sony robust  :o

Oh and I have a Dell  :y

Strangely enough, the most reliable one I have is an Acer Aspire 1510. It just keeps going. OK every 6 months I have to strip it and replace the CPU heatsink compound cause I'm too tight to use Artic silver, but it keeps going, no sign of the dreaded Nvidia graphics chip overheating like on modern HP's Dell etc.

Send the Viao to a museum, as yours is a record breaker ;D

As said, none of these companies make LCD panels, so they are equally robust.  A cracked screen is always caused by distress. Nothing else.

Apart from Acer's, most unreliable I have come across is the P4 based Latitudes, such as the C640. You can guarantee they will be needing a new system board within warranty, and again shortly after.

Of all the ones I have personally owned, including work issued ones, the most impressive was my last Tosh (Sat Pro 2410). By the time I gave it to my best mate, it had fallen in the bath 3 or 4 times, been dropped off worktop several times, even been left on somebody's sunroof after a tech2 session when they drove off.  OK,, the screen hinges had failed, the case looked battered, but the bloody thing wouldn't die. Still going strong now.

I avoid those powerhouse type lappys - the types that have discrete video, multiple hdds etc - you will never get enough airflow through.
