You see, this is what happens when you lets the socialists have the keys to the safe for 13 years.

I'm just thankfull that we had such a prudent chancellor from 1997 to 2007.

Thanks Gordon. TW#T! You printing Sterling like it was going out of fashion has pretty much destroyed my business. Nice one.

and presumably Gordon was at the helm in Greece, USA, Turkey, France, Spain, Italy and the rest of the world? I think the wheels are coming off that wagon to be honest - witness the booing on question time when tories and lib dems blamed labour, actually, no one has ever explained to me what the tories would have done differently....before the crunch David Cameron vowed to match Labours spending "pound for pound".

I suppose if you repeat a lie enough they're gambling everyone will eventually believe them  :y

I decided not to watch that when I read the blurb: "Film-maker Joe Bloggs explains why........".
Film makers should just stick to making films, we have people who purport to understand finance that are quite capable of scaring the shite out of us.

Yeah , like Geoffrey Howe and Nigel Lawson and several other eminent financiars who are interviewed on it.
The most startling interviews are with a National Union Leader and Alister Darling both of whom showed a frightening level of awareness regarding Government Finance.
Watch it .............

It reminded me of someone I once knew who spent and borrowed like there was no tomorrow.

He had a great lifestyle while the "prudent" among us only had a mortgage we could afford. We bothe started off at the same point on the housing market. By the time I got to a 40,000 house and a 1982 Vauxhall Viva he had a £230,000 house and a new BMW. His attitude was if he died his debt would be wiped out. Sadly he was probably right. I lost touch with him but often wonder where he is now!

The frightening thing about the national debt is that the people not yet born are going to have to pay it off. oh and it is still INCREASING not going down :( :(

An entertaining piece of theatre......I enjoyed watching it....but so simplistic.... it was almost laughable.

It was hardly objective reporting either....with phrases like...."the evils of socialism"......and "only capitalism can help us now"....oh yeah!!!

I'll wager that our own Mr Nickbat will think it was spot on..... ;) ;) :y

Is that really necessary?  Nickbat did not post the link or comment on it - why do you feel it acceptable to link him to it?  or is this simply to deflect a view that is against yours!?

For once Opti I have to agree with an opposite view to yours ::) ::) :'( :'(

I think the comment was a bit below the belt and targeted Nick very unfairly.  To predict how he is going to view something before he has said nought is not on.  Nick I believe is very good at grasping published arguments and should be respected for his views.  This does not do that.

Sorry, but this is from a critical friend Opti and please take it as that ;) ;) ;)

Just my opinion Lizzie......Nick and I differ on almost every subject...No malice or disrespect intended...I'm sure you'll agree there are far more personal insults posted here at OOF....than my rather gentle observations.... ;) :-* :-* :-*

I should add.......the slightly glib last line of my post was really  "slightly tongue in cheek"....hence the winkers.. :y :y

Just to show there are no hard feelings Lizzie.....this is for you .... :-* :-* :-*..........and this is for Nick... :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* ;)

I just watched it on 4 on demand. Very interesting, but to finish off by saying that we need to implement a "Hong Kong" type model was just plain silly.
Of course the Hong Kong economy is booming, but it has no armed forces to fund and the kind of life people live over there is totally different to ours. I notice that most of the manufacturing base has also disappeared and it seems to be one big service industry.
I'm not convinced of the figures either. If a socialist 'film maker' decided to use his skills to show us how a big state would be to our advantage, I'm sure he would, in the main, succeed.

That was far too serious for me, so  :P :P :P :P :P

Ignoring the jibes and thanking those who show their support for me on here, let me say that I did not watch the programme. That was a deliberate omission on my part.

Fundamentally, it is a simple problem. We're in debt and we need to find out how to get out of debt.

However this leads me on to two important points:

First of all, the sky is not falling. The aim of TV is to dramatise and fear is always welcome. But one needs to remember that all this talk about saddling future generations with debt (Oh, yes, bring on the children for added pathos!) is talk. Individually, they are not going to given a tax demand as they exit the womb, so let's cut the hyperbole.

The debt is large, very large, but there is no reason why this situation should not be compared to a simplified small business. The company has run up debts. Which way now? Yes, it will need to reduce spending, but that alone will not solve the problem. The company needs to increase turnover and profitability in order that the resulting increase in revenue should not only maintain the infrastructure of the firm (vitally), but contribute to the repayment of the debt. That means increasing sales.

Taking this example to the level of the state, it needs to control public spending but also energise the economy without damaging the infrastructure (vital). That is why the Chuckle Brothers have it entirely wrong with the increase in VAT and other taxes and  duties.

Going back to the example of the small firm, these clowns are effectively raising their product prices and hoping to skim off more to pay for the debt, blissfully unaware that the amount they take in revenue will, of course, fall. What they should be doing is reducing taxes (cf. reducing prices in the case of the small firm) to energise the economy and thus increase revenue in the form of tax income.

However, they are a bit dim, so expect a further slowdown in the economy. ::) :(

So I'm wondering, in that case, if the fiscal easing and generally slower approach to lessening the debt, as envisaged by the former Chancellor/s, is as valid as the actions presently being taken?

The fiscal easing of 2.5% vat was useful, but arguably not dramatic enough (5%?) and there should not have been a time limit. Also, there was no action proposed to control increases in public spending. All-in-all, half right, IMHO. Just like our current crew. B- mark for them all.  ;)
