Title: Only 8% of Olympics merchandise made in UK!
Post by: Varche on 12 November 2010, 11:00:59
What a missed gol;den opportunity. Apparently the Olympics make a lot of revenue from merchandising. Ours will too but although a few of the products are supplied by British companies only 8% is manufactured in the UK.

Only in Britain. The Spanish and French certasinly wouldn't have done that if they were hosting. Apparently a lot of the South African Olympics stuff was also sources abroad. I can sort of understand that.

And people wonder why the country is in trouble..............................

when i left school i did my apprentership on a huge trading estate. probably 90% were engineering companies, i go through on way to golf now and none there anymore. is this the problem, we dont make anything anymore, everything is from abroad, lack of skilled personel, no apprenterships just manual labour

Can't say that I'm at all surprised - profit before everything after all.

why would you make anything in the UK any more ?

our labour force has simply priced itself out of the market.

The Md for Vaughtons was on TV this morning. His workforce looked very skilled at making enamelled badges and the like.

Anyway the opportunity has gone and a dare say it will be another nail in a few coffins. Very sad.

I drag shipping containers around all day. Nearly everything is imported & the containers are sent back on the boat empty. Most of the little we export is waste. Tyres to be recycled, bales of fabric to be recycled then the new product is imported again. I'm not up on politics as it's all lies to feed the fat cats as is banking but what happened to our once strong manufacturing industry?
We've become a nation of retail parks & computer desks.  :(

Those computer desks give me a job, though .. I'd quite like them to stay around and not be replaced by a steel press or the like ;)

steel press

You're probably safe enough there A as they have joined the legion of machinery forever consigned to the garbage bin of our defunct manufacturing process.

Any industry needs blue & white collar workers to maintain an equilibrium but it seems there are less & les blue collar jobs & more white collar jobs nowadays.
   What went wrong?

Incompetent government, archaic union practice, globalisation and the lust for profit at any cost, in my view.

Only for a few short years in the 70's and a lot of lost opportunities that allowed the likes of Volvo to take over the management company car market...if only Rover had made a large family estate things may have been different...... :-/

a simple example....

say you want to make a widget, do you...

make it in the UK, where it has to conform to various standards, you have to meet Environmental rules for your factory, you have to have a corporate responsibility policy, maternity pay, sickness benefits, Health & Safety protection, ethical responsible behaviour, 75% tax on fuel, workforce representation (i.e. the right to strike) and on top of all of that to pay a wage of £5-odd an hour.

or, do you make it in China, where you have to do none of the above and workers are happy to do 80hours per week for less than a fiver in total.

not a difficult choice is it ?

yep - because all those workers on slave wages and poor conditions in China all spend their hard earned cash in Britain  ::) ;D
countries with the best working conditions and pay are the most prosperous, happy and have the lowest unemployment rates....but hey, the bottom line eh? to go for the cheapest option is simple minded, short term-ist and detrimental. of course, allowing the rest of the world to pluck our best companies from under our noses doesnt help as we're left with owners with no regard for the UK, only the mighty dollar....or yen  :y
