looks like they found a use for an old Concorde, just cut off the wings :y
amazing stuff, as a kid I knew every land speed record by car, driver, speed now I admit I have to look it up.......its not still 633mph in a Bluebird is it? ;D
-
fastest manned vehicle ever recorded was..............?

No BJ it is 763.053 mph, by Andy Green in 1997 ;) ;)

8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) ;)

Wing Commander Andy Greene - now there's a fella with a few screws loose :y
Interesting to note they don't do it at the salt flats anymore - I wonder if that's because the new location is smoother or larger? Somehow I can't help feeling that it's cheating if you change the parameters like that..
Still, incredible challenge and impressive research behind it.
-
yep aaron - they now use the Black Rock Desert flats, although changing from wheel driven vehicles to thrust driven "trolleys" is a bigger cheat in my opinion ;) :y :y
-
According to that article they're planning on using the 'Hakskeen Pan in South Africa's Northern Cape Province' for their 2012 attempt - so not Black Rock anymore either..
Good point, though - land speed record yes, but it's definitely not a car speed record.
Still.. hats off to anyone who wants to get behind the wheel of anything doing 1000mph across the ground :y

Is there a formal LSR for a vehicle using a normal IC engine driving road wheels?
-
Yeah, there's a whole bunch of different clases:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel-driven_land_speed_record
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vehicle_speed_records
Although good luck figuring out what the fastest IC engine record is.. unless you can get that via the Guinness website.

Not too shabby at all. :y

Which is why it is a whole different catageory...
There is still a catageory for the piston engine (currently 415.896 mph) ..

...am I the only one thinks the track is too narrow for the hight of the vehichle?
Thrust ssc is twice as wide and half the hight.....? :-?

But staying upright helps, don't fancy that much, "looks" like it'll blow over! Hit a dip or uneven patch of salt lake.... :o
.....I'd jump at a chance to drive ssc, but not blood hound, too top heavy and narrow on the face of it, but I guess they know what they're doing. :-/
-
Bikes stay upright, though, and they only have one wheel..
Seriously though, I'm guessing the gyroscopic effect of four 75Kg wheels doing 12,000 rpm is pretty big.

So would I if they put the wings back on!
If we were supposed to go that fast on land God wouldn't have invented the sky.

You can't wheelie it, but you can stoppie.. kinda (3 minutes in) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4YmVP6i4qw&feature=fvw
Engine might be cheaper after that....

I think in some states in the US you can get away with pretty much anything on the roads ;D (IIRC Texas is quite good for that - the total opposite of California)
