Title: Master Vamps - stupid boy!!!!!
Post by: Vamps on 10 November 2010, 21:25:56
Got a letter today from Northumbria Police ::) ::) his car is still in my name, well you can guess....Speeding, 40mph in a 30mph in Sunderland..... ::) ::) ::)

No point in having a go, I tend not to speed but we were all young once.... :-X

The stupid thing is that the particular speed camera has been there for 14 years that I know off, can be easily seen and there are ample warning signs. When I mentioned it to him he was not surprised as he saw the camera flash....

So I will have to send in his details and he will get a fine and 3 points, thing is he has only just passed his test so next time 6 points, is that it? or can he still have 6 points and then lose his licence after that? I am a bit out of touch.  ::)

i know life lessons and all that but if you don't speed take the hit :-/ may affect insurance as well??

If you get 6 points in your first two years after passing your test, you loose your licence.
And, any insurance company will hike the cost of cover by a lot with points added to a young drivers licence. Someone I know had to sell their vehicle as hardly any insurance companies would touch him, and he had 3 points.

As Josh says 6 points in 2 years and you have to retake your test. Is this his first offence? If so can try and blag a course.... Same cost as fine but just a one off

But he wont learn his lesson that way. ;)
I remember just after I passed my test I went to Dublin, and promptly crashed into a police car of all things. Insurance etc was in dads name so they rang him from the cop shop, where I was being held. Dad said "his accident, his problem, nothing to do with me" and put the phone down. ;D ;D ;D

Do you have to tell them before renewal???

I agree, harsh as it may seem, what lesson is it going to teach to take the points? This is real life and you have to live with the consequences of what you do IMO

You have to tell them when it happens. If any 'material facts' change you have to notify them of that. So when the 3 points are added to his licence, the insurance company need to be notified at that time.

I wasnt best pleasede at the time, but I laughed about it later. He didnt have me on his insurance again though. He only did it in the first place to try to get me away from motorbikes, as I had almost died in an accident the previous year.
It didnt work. ::) ;D ;D

But it will almost certainly slow him down and make him more aware :y

At the end of the day, we all speed at some point... He's now going to learn a valuable lesson that it has consequences :y

Check policy carefully as you do not normally have to disclose prior to renewal - I had a situation recently and it was clear from policy wording that no disclosure required even for a 6 pointer.

swmbo has just been talking to him, seems he may have done the same thing the following day >:( >:( >:( which means another 3 points and loss of licence which means he will not get the new job and will likely lose his current short time Job..... >:( >:( >:(

He owes me nearly £2k swmbo is not happy and has said he will pay every penny back, how I do not know how :'( :'( Looks like we will have a Saxo for sale, about £400 worth......

swmbo is seriously pissed as she used the 'F' word several times.......Kids eh  and what really annoys me is that his Dad is a director of SCS and earns mega bucks and has not contributed to any of getting him on the road..... >:( >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Oh dear! Going to be a couple of anxious days in the Vamps household then!

About the only thing I can suggest is that he goes to court if he gets a second NIP and pleads for leniency as it will cause financial hardship. No guarantee he'll get leniency but it is his best hope  :-/

been thru this with my own kids... (of which there are 5)

only solution is to hang the little tinkers out to dry.

they just won;t learn otherwise...

and when i say hang em out to dry.....   that includes kicking them out of they cant or wont; pay their keep...

otherwise they simply assume they can keep on just bimbling along , drinking your beer, eating you out of house and home, making a mess all over the place and costing you a fortune in assorted motoring related expenses, and never have to lift a finger to work, or contribute to the household....

they all know full well that i'll leave em to rot in jail cells if they get in trouble.... and that the same extends to traffic offenses.

The revocation of the driving licence is, unfortunately, automatic for a "new driver" with 6 or more points. The magistrates do NOT have the powers to over-ride this, only the Secretary of State can do this .. :(

successful speeding is an acquired skill demanding lots of common sense and the ability to avoid being a leader on a motorway at over 85 mph

 :y  ;)

Not to mention alertness. Those who get caught (or have a close shave) should really ask themselves if they were paying enough attention to the road, because, with a few exceptions, most instruments by which a conviction is made are not difficult to spot.

We've all done it, though. ::)

Depends if the van is just around a bend or whether it's a gun aimed from a small hatch in the back of a transit.

True. Or one of Brunstrom's ones shaped like a horse's *rse in the back of a trailer.

Seems he will have to take his test again, including the Theory......It cost a small fortune to get him a car, insure it the first year and pay for driving lessons, work, MOT, Tax etc, and the insurance this year, he still owes me £1800.00............ :'( :'(

We live in a small village so will make getting work much harder, fortunately he has some work with my brother a few miles away, so he could cycle or get a bus....

Yeah - try getting him insured next time around! They'll probably just ask for your kidney or spleen rather than give you a price..

If work is only a few miles, get him a bike and tell him to like it or lump it ;)

Heck at 16 I lived 10 miles outside of York - used to get the bus to York, walk across town and get the next bus the next 13 miles to Pocklington every day for work.. at 15 I was cycling 10 miles each way for my first 'part time' proper job. It won't kill him ;)

Thing is Andy, this one is the nicer of the 2, if you remember previous conversations... :-X But he has really annoyed me over this, not repaying any money simply says he has none, but is out every night, not drinking but out and about. Some issues about him coming out of education as well,   :-X and a step son as well, so have to tread carefully with swmbo But if he looses his licence the car will be sold and there will be not more help, he is on his own.....

give the kid a break - hes young and stupid - we all were (and sometimes still are), plus, if it slows him down a bit then its a price worth paying....theres a reason insurance companies dont like young male drivers, as someone whos had numerous points for speeding, i cant really wag my finger. i should know better - but he's learning.....and no one was hurt  :y

Neither can I but that is not the point. He is a lovely Lad, not trouble at all. Yes we all live and learn, but twice in 2 days and now loses his licence and has to start all over again, and cost me thousands........

His Dad earns megabucks and would not pay anything towards getting him on the road in the first place, not Master Vamps fault but adds additional stress between swmbo and myself......

Why would that make a difference, still 2 offences however you look at it, and believe me I have looked at it......Has nothing to do with 'did he know an offence had been committed' on paper, cos he did in real life.... ::)
There are enough people on here to know if there was a defence, though second one was 'lost and late for a job interview' first was 'finding where the interview was'....... ::) ::) ::)

Oh bummer i didn't realise when I was typing. I hope not! :-/
I think the magistrates should show discretion in cases like this though.

Say if you get done for speeding once. It's highly likely you weren't speeding only at the moment you passed the camera. You were probably speeding all the way on your entire journey. So it's just bloody unlucky to get caught twice.

Sounds like he's learned his lesson, no doubt he'll be worried sbout what will happen, and the stick he'll be getting off you and Mrs Vamps.

To get banned, you have to go to court. I know this - fortunately for me I had a genuine sob story and didn't get banned many moons ago.

When he goes to court I can only say to act with alot of humility, say how sorry he is, state the circumstances, lay it on a bit but not too much. Hopefully the madge will be ok.

Vamps, if/when he gets a court date, let me know. I know a madge who sits in Sunderland. I could say what a good lad he is.

It wasn't that one on ryhope road was it?

Yep, Southmoor school...... ::) ::)

Yeah horrible cheeky one that is, there's one facing the other way next to it. Then a bit further along past the petrol station there's another two facing both directions :(
This might mean we have another one to go then...... :'( :'(

if he gets 2 NIPs in the post the best thing he can do is wait for the conditional offer or the dummons.  Take them both to court and get them heard at the majistrates, hopefully he can plead his case and get less than 6 points for them both.  If he takes the conditional offer from the police he will get 3 points per each and he will have his license revoked having hit the young driver limit of 6.  He can, however, retake his test almost immediately at which point the young driver limit no longer applies and he will then have the full 12 points to play with like the rest of us.  Either way his insurance premium will go up  :'(
