Title: sky
Post by: rikki_essex on 15 November 2010, 10:43:14
Ive just had sky installed an apparently i can only watch the channel i am recording because i dont have two feeds coming in. I used to have sky then left them and have now gone back but i used to be able to record one channel and watch another. The only thing that is different is i have now got the sky +HD box even tho i havnt got the sky hd package but the subby said its the only box they use. Is this right?

You need a dual LNB (the receiver on the dish) if sky havent installed one of them and dual feeds back to the box.

The boxes are now all the same and your subscription unlocks different parts of it's functionality depending on how much of your soul monthly income you pay to Sky.

If Sky did the install and didnt put in a dual LNB and cabling then you should go back and get them to sort it  :y

If it's communial then there should be a splitter for each line.  I forget the exact technicalities but you have to be careful of the V and H sync (I spent ages dealing with this when I lived in Germany)  as you cant get a splitter to deal with both at the same time.  I think you need a splitter on each feed and then take a feed from each one but maybe someone with more nouse can better advise.

Again if Sky installed this then they should have done a better job  :y

Each LNB channel can operate in 2 frequency bands and in horizontal or vertical polarisation. Your set top box sends signals up to the LNB to select a combination of band and polarisation depending on the channel you are viewing / recording.

Two channels may be on different combinations of the above so you need 2 feeds to view/record 2 channels and that has always been the case although if the channels selected are on the same multiplex it's possible that the box may be able to record them using a single feed.

In a communal system you will normally have a quad LNB generating feeds for each of the possible combinations, and a system that splits and switches the appropriate LNB output to each resident's box. You will still need 2 feeds from such a system to get full Sky plus functionality though. Something to pester your landlord about, I guess. :-/

There are devices that can distribute 2 feeds down one piece of coax but you'd need to install a splitter / combiner both at the distribution system and behind your set top box.

Hello Kevin thanks for you reply and Guffer for that matter. I own the flat so i can’t go to the landlord (i wish i could). Ill have to talk to the neighbours as i know a few of them have got sky and see if theres anything that can be done.

I spoke to my neighbour last night and he said they done the same to him but he went out and bought the second cable and fitted it and it worked straight away. We have the same sockets on the wall so im guessing its the same. I phoned the company that fitted it and he said the engineer must of tested the socket and it didnt work. I told them he didnt even bring a tester in all he bought in was the box and one cable. So they are sending me a cable through the post if it works i shall be ringing sky and complaining about the company.

a lot of installs are now sub contracted out, especially flat installs with shared dishes as they don't need a van with ladders and bits.

Do ring Sky and complain, as its only info from customers can tell them if they are doing it right.

Tunnie they didnt even bring the second cable up so i dont think they had any intension of putting it in are they that worried about the cost of one cable.

Yes is the short answer.

Then make a complaint about the subcontracted company who did the install.  :y
