Hello, my brother is getting married on a Caribbean cruise ship holiday in February, two weeks. I'm going.
Just wondering if anyone has been on anything similar and what they think? It's not my cup of tea. Don't really fancy it TBH.
What do you do on a ship for 2 weeks?

Well I have fancied going on a cruise for quite a while now - especially since I heard it's the 1st thing a lot of women tend to spend part of thier divirce settlement on. ::)

Haha! Well I had hoped there might be some women with no inhibitions ladies on board, but I can't imagine single women of my age, 28, going on a cruise!

Don't forget you dicky bow.....

Don't limit yourself geoff.
There is alot to be said for 40 something ladies with a bob or two and nothing to lose/prove. :y

With age come experiance.
A two week holiday you could learn quite a lot. ::)

Hi,
Had my honeymoon as a two week cruise round the Caribbean in feb 2009. First thing to say is - it was fantastic! (I was 33 then so not that different to you - and it was my first cruise ever)
I could tell you of all the places we visited, what it was like on the ship etc etc but a big factor for relevancy is which ship/company you going with? They vary quite a lot!
Also, where are your destinations? And how many days at sea have you and how many ports?
Overall, mon, it's no problem. 8-)
be happy to divulge any more info you'd like :y :y

I spent a week on a cruise ship in Hawaii a few years ago.
All I can say is a week wasn't long enough! I was apprehensive and I loved it :y
Best part was that if you were jetlagged things were still open such as the gym, food court or bar ::)

Don't you believe it, a lot of them will think you're an old man ;D

I worked on cruise ships for 3 years and the Caribbean was one of my favourite places, I would still love to go out there again. I am sure all will enjoy it :y

Buy elasticated trousers or a belt as your waistline will double. I have never ever seen such conspisious consumption. There was always somewhere open where you could eat and the food was quite good!!
You will be thankfull you own an Omega and not a micro car when you get back. ;D ;D

You can quite easily spend at least a week in the Engine Room hunting the Golden Rivet with the Chief Engineer if the 'normal' ships itinerary isn't excitement enough! ::) ;D :y

The ventura with P&O - it's a family ship as there are kids in the party so not many single women here i think!

So you're the one who parts vulnerable..... sexually frustrated..... middle aged women from their money...... ;)...You cad Sir....

Food wise, think along the lines of....
Sunday dinner every day and Christmas Dinner on a Sunday.
When I did my apprenticeship under the red duster, good food was a done deal.
On the passy boats, more so, as its for fare paying passengers rather than wage pullers.
Is the cruise formal or informal? If the latter, no great need for the tux/dickie bow but, that said, dress smart, get smart results, if you follow..... ;)

So you're going to pull, or for the wedding? ;D. If it's a family ship it won't be stuffy and black tie all the time... which means if there is a formal night or two it's extra special! (I got me a tux from the charity shop for £20!!). I agree that if you make some effort on other nights at dinner it may get you rewards. After all with over 3000 passengers there should be some worth chatting up!
There should also be a fair amount of entertainment, whether movies, live shows, bands, nightclub etc. Ours also had a casino, bars, shops, fitness places (apparently!) and then there's always the sea! It is very pleasant to spend a while with a cocktail just watching the waves, sky, wildlife etc etc!
Oh and about the food, i agree with the endless amount! One restaurant on ours never closed, merely switched food served. From breakfast to mid morning snacks to lunch to afternoon snacks to dinner, to supper to night time munchies! That was in addition to the formal dining rooms and pizza restaurant :y
Our ship 'only' had about 2000 passengers so is a fair bit smaller than yours. I presume you've checked out http://www.pocruises.com/Cruise-Ships/Ventura/Ship-Overview/ for it's features. Wow what a vessel!! :o
oh and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Ventura
One tip from our trip tho is take some drinks for your room, or get them in duty free or something. The bar drinks weren't included and were pretty pricey! Plus our home made cocktails seemed much nicer anyway. Oh and we went to the buffet restaurant for free ice, slice, and soft drink mixers. :y :y
You will have an amazing time, if you want any tips on the islands, mine would be enjoy the local food and beer, make your own tours rather than book em on the ship and my personal highlights were Barbados and Grenada. We also went to Aruba, Bonaire, Isla Margarita, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Dominica, Antigua, St Martin, St Thomas & Samana! You could also try the Rough Guide books.
Happy cruising. It's ace!

Thanks for a very helpful reply Dave! I'm liking the idea more and more! I'll just have to get my head round the idea of being on a ship and a certain amount of freedom lost for a while, a bit alien. I'm liking your 'improvisation' it's the way ahead! Is there duty free on the ship or do you have to get it before you get on?
I've heard about these packages where you pay x amount for all your drinks so that might be worth it. I wonder if they'll let me take home brew aboard! ;D

lol. no problem mon 8-) 8-)
if you buy duty free on board they'll confiscate keep it safe til you get off the ship. And in theory if you buy stuff in ports they'll want to keep that safe too. However we did and they didnt. Also we bought some champagne and gin on the way out so that just went straight into our room :)
interesting fruit juices in the islands too!
the only package on our ship was for Coke in a re-sealable bottle with a straw (a la Alton Towers etc!) :(
oh and i don't know how often you'll be off the ship where you'll be free to roam, but the ship is massive! I really can't see how you'll miss any freedom while onboard. If we had four storey glass lifts onboard in the middle of the ship does that sound small? ;D
have fun investigating and imagining how it'll all be :)
-
I'll be doing a little improvisation myself by the sounds of it then! Don't agree with them keeping your bought and paid for alcohols safe.
Thanks
-
think it's cause they'd rather you bought drinks from the bar, oh and maybe a legal tax type thing too!
-
Oh yeah, I know they want you to buy their drinks but didn't think about tax issues!
Was there a running deck on the ship?
