Does anyone on here know muh about the morris vedette engine? characterists, size, weight, hp etc
i am looking to put one in my boat but unable to find anything to confirm whether it is suitable.
TIA :y

It's basically the sidevalve engine from the Morris 8, have a read of this...

wont the v6 fit? ::)

Can't help with the question I'm afraid but curious on your choice of engine, are you thinking of running it through an out drive or straight through?
-
I dont think sailboats have the correct hullshape to get on the plain with a V6 ;D ;D
I am looking for a very small compact marine engine that will push out 5-12 hp with a gearbox (prob 2:1) forward, neutral and reverse. Would like electric start and a big enough alternator to charge 3 leisure batteries
Oh and it's gotta be cheap! ;D ;D
-
Plenty of 850cc A series engines about, ideal power range and a good high output alternator will charge the leisure batteries
-
A friend of mine had a Loftus Bennett in which he fitted a Reliant Robin engine compleat with gearbox rigged straight through to the prop, It pushed it along nicely especially with four foward gears unusual set up for a boat that more commonly has one forward and one reverse
-
... in which he fitted a Reliant Robin engine ......
I was thinking along the same lines, the Reliant 850 is all ally & so is relatively light. It's not exactly powerful though, 37/38 bhp I think. ;) ;)

Still bigger and more powerful than I need. the gap i need to fit it in is 14" wide x 16" high :y

Thought about a Chinese Yanmar diesel engine clone?
e.g: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YANMAR-TYPE-ENGINE-UD178-DIESEL-NEW-BARGAIN-PRICE-/260693256592?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item3cb2876990
Available from 4 up to about 10 BHP.
The electric start models have an alternator built into the flywheel.
Max RPM is 3600.
I believe you can get a model with power take-off from the camshaft so 1/2 speed.
I guess you'd have no reverse though. :-/
Lots of generators with these style engines come up on ebay so you could probably wait for one with fried electrics and get the engine relatively cheap.
I bought a knackered one 'cos I fancied a project a couple of years back (got a project too - it had been run without oil). Anyway, it did a 24 hour radio contest on about 6 or 7 litres of diesel so pretty frugal.
Not quiet, mind. You'd want to box it in on a boat if you want to be able to hear yourself think. ;D

Have thought about that but when you figure the costs of adapting the gearbox (reverse is essential) then it is cheaper to get a real yanmar :'(

Depending on the year the Vedette was largely the same as the equivalent capacity Morris road engine. So, depending on which version you're looking at you can get the details for the car one and you'll be on the right lines.
There's one on eBay right now by the way currently at small change price.

That is certainly A-series based. Loops like an A-series with a water cooled exhaust manifold.
I did take the head off to inspect the condition of the bores which are very good with minimal wear.
Why does that always ring alarm bells? Still, it's only an A series..
It's going to weigh a fair bit, though.

yes thats the one i was looking at, and one has to ask what prompted him to take the heads off? and why not put it back on? :-?
What is so basic about an A series?

It was designed in 347BC, when engines were simpler things.. ;D
Really though it just just 'old technology' that makes it simple AFAIK - large clearances, single carb, two valves per cylinder etc.

Always strikes me that it's either:
1) He took the head off, didn't like what he saw, so chucked it on Ebay.
2) He's a bit of a tinkerer and couldn't leave it be so stripped it then ran out of talent. ;D
But perhaps I'm too cynical. ;)

The point being it's not like it will be impossible to get spares to get it back running.
I reckon it'd make a nice project. It looks reasonably complete and if he's honest about the internal condition a couple of hours' work will see it running. That looks like a dynamo rather than an alternator, but a trip to the scrappies with 20 quid would resolve that.
Might be a tight squeeze into your gap and I see a lot of cast iron in those pictures so it might be heavy. :-/

Basically they were built at the factory and then converted by a subsidiary, up in Lincolnshire I think they were. Still fairly easy to get all the bits, of course the usual mechanical components are very easy to find.
-
I wonder why they've mounted the distributor on top of the bellhousing rather than the usual location driven from the camshaft? :-/
Kevin
-
Honestly no idea about that, my first thought was to get it up a bit higher but it doesn't look like it has gained anything in the pics compared to the standard placing. There does seem to be a fair bit of info on them dotted round the web though, so it should be easy enough to sort out, particularly as the lump is one of the most basic engines you can get and the rest of it is deliberately designed to be easy to strip and fix in situ.
-
Ok well I guess the chap had a decent offer as he has removed the listing.
I have a feeling that the standard engine fitted to my type of boat was a stuart turner. Now most engines that are as old as my boat are simple engine and clutch.
I have come across this one which is clutched only. How difficult do you think it will be to fit a gearbox with fwd/N/rev?

Shame. That looked ideal.
I think boats reverse using an epicyclic gear so you can go from forward to reverse and back without fumbling with a gearbox. It just brakes the housing with a brake band. Not something that's easily knocked-up. :-/

I was thinking more getting a gearbox and making it fit.
A la...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/marine-engine-gearbox-twin-disc-technodrive-/250730816510?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_Boat_Engines_EngineParts_SM&hash=item3a60b8a3fe
...maybe?

That looks a little more like it could be made to fit something. :-/
Both as a package would be by far the easiest, though.

Time to stop pi$$ing about.. You know this is what you need. 8-)

If I stick a hydrfoil on the keel and add a couple of stabilisers it would work ;D
