Title: Bank Charges
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 25 November 2010, 11:06:45
My fault entirely ....but... :-[ :-[ :-[

I should have paid the balance on my MBNA Visa card by the 7th November....It was the paltry sum of just £52.20.

However my payment arrived one day late on the 8th November......I now have a late payment charge of £12 .....plus £1..interest....in total £13....this amounts to a quarter (25%)of the original balance. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

At first I was more than a little pissed.. >:( >:( >:(...but then I thought.......If my misfortune in some way helps an impoverished  banker to have a better Christmas than mine......then I'm a happy man. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ;)

Happy Christmas to all the banks and bankers of the world......I really love you guys... :P :P :P

Now chop up the card into tiny pieces and chuck it in the bin. That'll learn'em, and there are plenty more credit card companies eager for your business..

Quite a few of 'em charge more than £12 if you forget your payment (not that I'd know, of course, never having done that  :-[ :-[ :-X) .. so be careful which one you pick ;D

I did speak to a gentleman in customer services Kevin......I politely explained I was just one day late with my payment ......and  as a gesture of goodwill.....perhaps MBNA could waive the charges...He laughed for an inordinately long time before the phone went dead....  :-/ :-/ :-/ ;)

It used to be more than that.  But I think something was arranged to kerb it at £12 as the most often affected people were unable to afford the charges with more charges added and added added etc.

Ah maybe it is capped across the board now - I remember it being considerably more than £12 when I missed a payment years ago with MBNA, oddly enough..

But checking back, last time I did it (I know, I know!) it was £12 with Tesco, too.

That has worked  for before now with MBNA. It's set up as a direct debit now so I can't forget.

Sounds more worthy of a Molotov cocktail through the window of the call centre >:( but it's a long way to Hydrabad, especially with no intact credit card to book the flight. :(

Excellent. Two birds with one stone. Helped a banker and improved your happiness index. Not much more before you are a perfect 10 ;D

MBNA are a bunch of chancers - once they scent blood they go mad.

I got into difficulties a few years ago. And they were far and away the worst.

I had to get abusive and threaten with Police to stop them calling me a few times a day while I was dealing with a IFA.

I would NEVER deal with them again.

Halifax were not too bad in comparison but still evil. RBS were pretty bad but not as bad as MBNA but RBS got me in trouble in the first place.

Stage 1 Shitifax sold off the cash machine I did my backing with and got hit with the odd late payment - managed to stop them.

Stage 2 Had some trouble coping so called RBS, they RBS agreed to fixed payments so I sent cheques in for next three months, they paid them in all at once >:( >:( >:( >:( then billed me for late payments for the other two - I refused to pay and took it up, they clobbered my credit rating >:( >:(. The clobbering got the vultures at MBNA excited and Shitifax dropped my credit limit BELOW my current balance.

My advice - take credit card and cut into little pieces, then call round to MBNA HQ and shove the pieces up a managers (inset favourite orifice).

Anyway RBS and MBNA are on my do not deal with list and I am slowly moving business from Halifax. Mortgage went very soon after this debacle.

I use mine all the time, then you've no worries about whether you have enough cash on you for whatever ..... fuel, food etc As long as you're paid as much as you spend on it, then there's no problem. (I know that could be easier said than done  ::))
As cheques are increasingly becoming something of the past, then at  some point for somethings I don't know how you'd manage without one eg car insurance (I know you don't drive, but you get my meaning  ;))

Not to mention payment protection in case the stuff doesn't turn up/is broken/etc, and internet fraud protection you can get with a credit card that you (usually) don't with a debit card ;)

Very useful things.

Now if only I could stick to that 'not spending more than I earn' thing ;D

It suprises me that the card companies allow payment by direct debit, they must make a fortune out of people who forget to make a payment >:(

They must.
I suppose I'm one of the worst type of MBNA customers, they only make money from who ever I buy stuff from. I pay up in full each month.  :y  :y

I'm considered quite an expert on bank charges and debts and stuff [1]:

The charges are set at £12 because that is what the Financial Ombudsman Service says that at that rate or less, they will not *automatically* consider the charge as "disproportionate".

There is statute law which states that the penalties for breaking the terms of the contract cannot be more than the actual costs incurred by the aggrieved party.
So BY LAW a bank or credit card cannot charge you more than it actually costs them.
This is the basis behind the "claim back your bank charges" adverts.

If anyone is having problems with debts, or finance houses in general, I HEARTILY recommend www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk

It's a forum (much like this) with free advice, letter templates etc.
I couldn't find the current figure at a quick glance, but they claim to have helped reclaim £1.5M (?) in bank charges.

and this:
http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?131409-Cheekiness-towards-a-DCA&highlight=cheekiness+towards+a+DCA

is worth a read if you're getting phone calls from DCA (debt collecting arsgencies

[1] mainly by me :.) [2]
[2] but I have reclaimed about 30k in bank charges and missold PPI for both myself and family members - as well as getting a 20K loan written off...
