Title: Is this dodgy?
Post by: Tony H on 25 November 2010, 19:00:44
Evenin' all. Not being that well up on computer know how I thought I'd run it past you people with more knowledge than me.

About half an hour ago I had a phone call from what sounded like an Asian gentleman. It was a witheld number, he informed me that as I was a windows customer he could do an online check of my computer for me and requested me to turn the computer on, at which point I declined his invitation and put the phone down. has anyone got any idea if this is Kosher or not. :-/
TIA
Tony

Absolutely not, do not even listen to these people they are total con artists.

Not being funny, but you said yourself you're not up to speed wth computers, that is what they rely on.

Why would he ring you out of the blue just to help you, for nothing in return? Sounds like he probably wanted to gain access to your pc for personal/bank information etc.

Don't let anyone who calls to access your computer.

Why do you even answer witheld numbers? If they are genuine callers they will not withold their number. I pay £4 a month for anonymous call reject, if they want to speak to me, they give me the number they are ringing from.

And yes, Tony, this is an old scam.

Had one of these herberts ring the other day.
Asked him a few simple questions which he clumsily tried to avoid then said " Look we both know you're trying to scam me."
Even that didn't deter him so I gave him a few choice phrases of Anglo Saxon and he finally put the phone down. ;D ;D ;D

The problem there Steve is my home and work number are the same so I could possibly miss out on potential customers if I.D witheld numbers were blocked

They tried it on with me, I told them that I was not going to give them the information, though I might not have been quite so polite..... :)

I answered the phone earlier to an Asian woman asking if I was Mr Andy B. I asked why she was phoning a number on the Telephone Preferential Service list ......... ?

She put the phone down on me!  :-? :-?
