Title: Thinking about buying a press
Post by: feeutfo on 21 November 2010, 10:29:09
...perhaps not suprisingly....  ::) ;D

...any pointers? 12 ton? bench mounted or floor standing? Can't see I'll need floor standing and the extra throat depth, but then there's not that much difference in price. Have had need of one on other cars and my bushes need doing on both cars here. So with 240 quids worth of wishbones needed I can buy a press and bushes and still be quids in. :y

Can buy one on gaybay for less than the price of a pair of wishbones...

Although they all seem to have this delayed delivery date, what's that all that about?

Anyway, thoughts on these...?

Not only that but you are nice and centrally located for a postal or personal visit press bush service (ooer missus). You would have the makings of an SME there.

You could buy old cast off wishbones for a few pence, coat of paint and new bushes off the peg.

Name for the enterprise Wishbushes RUS?  ;D

I have a similar one to those as well as the 20 ton one and its ok for occasional use but don't expect much. The pin that is below the jack has a tendency to bend/snap off (re-welded mine back on) and they're not the most precision presses .

Dazzler used something like that to do my bushes and I thought I was going to end up buying him a new one at one point. :o

Groaned a bit but did the job.

Bear in mind you'll need some drifts of exactly the right size.

never used one.

i fit commercial vehicle bushes with large hardened allthread.

the more important part is the tool or whatever you use to sit over the bush onto the edge or shell of the bush.

i have a large box with some old pipe dies of various diametre.

as for pressure on the small bushes (sprinter bottom ball joints/rmovano top ball joint) a large vice  (preferably someone elses) and a hammer suffice.

you have a better "feel" when fitting.

workshop fitting the merc balljoints stuck a hole in the roof thru over zealous use of a press!!

I was wondering about the range when they finally pop out, can it be aimed? Like over a neighbours fence...? ;D

Kevin

and a ring of some sort to support the other side of the wishbone while the bush is going in or out, they're only pressed steel and easily distort.

A BIG vice will do the job as well as one of those cheap presses, although it helps to have an assistant to hold the spacer and drift in postion while you take up the slack.

I have pressed out many, many suspension bushes with the trusty old vice :y

58mm about 2" 1/4" ..... is that all? I remembered the Senator's being bigger, but I know the Omega's isn't dissimilar so can't be.  :-/

Here you go, mate. Machine Mart - always a winner, and bound to be a VAT free day soon.

Just need some apples. I've got the rest of the kit. Mmm. Cider. :P

Right, had a go on a couple of presses at local garages and it's not so straight forward. First one did not have a floating head! Meaning the side frame is in the way when doing the forward bush. It means holding the wishbone on end and throug the middle of the "parallel bars" on the press, this in turn means the side frame is in the way, unless like the second press used, it has a sliding ram meaning pressing off center to the press to get it all lined up.

So needs to be ten ton with a sliding head, or fixed head with a very wide throat....or a single beam to press on instead of a two parallel beams....? Can just hook the wishbone on the side then.

I would say 10 ton is a little light duty

Mark, did you ever get anywhere with that 'reclaimed press' that was a little on the 'weighty' side?

Hmmm, maybe. Although this one never went over 8ton according to the gauge. Nout to say the gauge was accurate, but I reckon the hydraulics had a bit more to give, and the bush had peaned over from me belting the edge with a sledge, press still forced the bush in.

Was yours single beam Mark?

I'd actually be interested in buying one of those presses. The amount of times I've needed one, mind you if I pack in the trading won't be much point  :-/
