Title: Back Pain
Post by: Lazydocker on 30 November 2010, 23:08:59
Somehow managed to do my back in yesterday (good and proper) and never been in so much pain :'( :'(

Can barely move, sciatic pain, pins and needles in both feet, physically cannot stand up straight or stand up/sit down or lift my left leg. SWMBO has to help me through the transition from one state to the another, although once there it's not too bad... Still ache but just about bearable now the pain killers I've chucked down my neck have taken the edge off.

Not like me as I rarely suffer real pain and avoid taking pills ordinarily. SWMBO has known me 22 years, watched me walking 3 days after knee surgery and witnessed me go through some rather painful experiences without more than a grimace on my face.

She's rather concerned but I'm hoping to feel a little better tomorrow... Although I have called in sick now.

But, as TB would say... It's only pain. It'll go away!

Get yourself checked out Paul, at the least see a Physio to learn the recovery position for a slipped disc (or do a Google you may find it there!). Ask your GP for Tramadol or similar strength painkiller (contradiction in terms since they don't kill it they only dull it!) & buy some antihistamine tablets in case you get itching with the painkillers. Make sure you don't slouch in a chair, keep yourself upright with a  cushion or some form of support in the small of your back, & ditto when you go to bed. I hope it is just a strain & nothing more Paul, you have my utmost sympathy & understanding! :(

Going to take a view on it in the morning... Have convinced SWMBO that I don't need to go to A&E after speaking to the emergency quack but can't get a comfortable position :'(

We've got a whole pharmacy of various pills and potions here and Tramadol is in the box... But I don't like taking pills at all so will avoid it unless it's a last resort (tomorrow if I haven't slept tonight ;))

In another half an hour I can take Codeine and Diclofenec again (at double the normal dose by order of the doc :y) so should get a little relief for some sleep. Also been using a Tens machine all evening :y :y

I did 'something' to my back a while back and spent four days flat on my back (and front, which was more comfortable somehow) with the most excruciating agony I've ever experienced every time I moved - heck, it took me an hour to make it down the stairs to get the Ibuprofen & paracetamol (and to start necking the former like they were going out of fashion!)

It was that bad that I called my mum ;D (poor dear, nothing she could do, she's 100 miles away with no car!)

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Bit of pain never hurt anyone Paul. :y :D........hot water bottle on the place where it hurts and see the doc if it doesnt soon get better, might be a slipped disc which is rather painful. ;)

That's what SWMBO thinks and I must confess, I've just looked up the symptoms and treatment and I do tick all the boxes on the symptoms page and am doing all the right things treatment wise ;)

Paul, I understand that, believe me, I do not like to take drugs that mask the pain.  However sleeping well is important, have a couple of night caps and go and see your GP as soon as.... :)

sorry to hear..  :(

for the last 10 days I'm suffering only pain in the left shoulder and neck and it nearly disabled me.. :(

so I can understand how you really feel..

visit a doc.. have some pain killers for few days and rest.. then try exercising when the pain diminishes abit..

in my case exercise helped ..

When I had these kind of problems the painkillers helped but not much, have you tried the gel instead of pills?

sympathise with you mate as have had a bad back years now, sadly once youve got that weakness seems you'll always have it. When I originally hurt mine, like an idiot I continued to try and work through it , carrying loads etc. At that time they were all talking about specialists and traction and stuff but the real trick is to have only a limited amount of rest and instead concentrate on specific exercises. Still get the odd twinge-especially at this time of year as it gets colder-and, more often than not, this happens not when Im lifting anything heavy but rather doing something quite simple and its just that Ive twisted the wrong way . Like you, am loathe to take pain killers unless absolutely necessary but do find that doing slow and gentle stretching exercises like tai-chi help. Being quite tall doesnt help but then neither does my seeming unability to loose the weight from the   belly area ;D  Anyhow, I know how miserable it can be so hope you feel better soon :y

Everyone is different, but I tend to lay out on the floor when my back is bad.  Partly because I can't move (as the floor isn't that comfy), but mostly I does tend to help mine.

I refrain from pain killers:
a) medication is for poofs
b) last time I popped a couple (when I fell off the bike), I was in a strange, pleasant yet strange, world ;D

I also suffer from back trouble and have done for a fair number of years.  I generally avoid painkillers as, like a number of others, I would rather know what movement is painfull (and thus, counterproductive to healing) rather than mask the feeling and probably do further damage by wrong movement.

Medical opinion is always preferred, I would say, just in case there is some serious underlying condition rather than just a pulled muscle or general discomfort.

Everyone is different, especially as regards getting a comfortable position, but trial and error....   :y

I tell you, when the buggers wore off (in the middle of the night), I was in so much pain I went to be sick...  ...didn't make it to the bathroom, I passed out on the way.  Thats what I call pain ;)

I actually did more facial damage in the passing out than I did in the motorbike accident :o

Yep, bath and seat heaters have worked wonders for me too. I'm OK when in a position (generally) but getting from one to another can be a tad uncomfortable ::)

Been out for a gentle stroll today as SWMBO wanted to do some shopping. There is definitely some improvement, although still rather uncomfortable. Can't fetch in the fire wood and struggling to do anything other than gentle movements.

Tens machine is working wonders though, better than any painkillers!

Depends on your dr's view.....years ago it used to be the norm to lie about to aid back recovery......now with peeps getting DVT's for not moving about....dr's tend to prescribe painkillers and tell you to keep moving about....Last time i had a bad problem....my dr precribed me a box of 100 industrial strength co-codamol (i carnt take aspirin, im allergic to them) and told me to keep doing as i would normally. He also claimed i couldnt damage my back further  :-/

Got it sorted with a few visits to an osteopath  :y

Tho if you plan on going to a physio or osteo......you need to go soon, because if it is a slipped disc.....the longer you leave it.....its harder for them to put back it....and more painful for you  ;)
Title: Re: Back Pain

Pain killers and tens machine are the way for me too.

I get spasms in lower back right side, tens snaps the muscles out of the spasm, eventually, for me. But expect some seriously painful twinges that subside with time to a constant dull ache. So don't carry anything,ESP not valuable (or heavy obviosly) for a while after.

Gp ime is a complete waist of time when it comes to structural stuff, and physio or Chyro are usually too booked unto be a first response.

By the time an appointment is sorted recovery is under way. But there will be something pressing on a nerve somewhere so go see em.  :'(

In my case any form of treatment is hopeless until the muscles can be made to relax, which takes time for you to trust it not go go terWANG again. Rest, painkillers and tens, make an appointment asap for a couple of days time to get it manipulated when the pain is bearable....ime anyway.

Best of luck.  :-*
