This is not too far from me and is a road I often use.
Makes me laugh when the MP mentions what they could do. Simples, grit it before the roads get blocked with trafic. I was parked in a layby at 3am (with my girlfried just 2 weeks ago further up from the road blockages and was amazed at the amount of lorries that actually use it.
There is a highways salting depot on the M1 J31/A57 just 2 miles from the (Redlion - Todwick crossroads) but the councel and highways are different funding and different agency's.

It's all very picture-squeue but the underlying fact remains that, based on the astounding chaos this current spell of bad weather (in British terms) has caused, the infrastructure of this country has yet again shown what a perilous state it's in.

Absolutely astounding that a country like ours can be reduced to chaos in only a few short days of such weather.
'Government' isn`t just about sending troops and setting budgets.......for, local councils seem unable to make provision for the things that REALLY matter to ordinary people: roads, street cleansing/drains, waste collections and street lighting........but wait, now they`re (evidently) tasked with sorting out our obesity problems and making provision for 'minority' inclusion (what ever that might-be?!?).
Something`s gotta give! >:(

I would go further an say that 'it' has already given as the system of government here seems to have been perverted over the recent past with outside institutions and quangos apparently going the job of elected representatives.

£160 million is earmarked for keeping the country going in bad weather, while over £700 billion has been pledged to combat "global warming" because, as we all know, snowfalls are now just a thing of the past and our "Children just aren't going to know what snow is" (Dr Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, quoted in March 2000).

That's fine, but they need to keep roads like the A57 clear in that area before the snow sets in, rather than waste millions untangling the lorry traffic jam afterwards.
As I have said before, they wont clear roads as it is all about cost cutting, but how many people cant get to work at the moment, So long term what are the governemnt losing long term in tax and VAT (On fuel alone)
Keep the roads clear and keep the wheels of industry turning, this sort of snow fall didnt bother us in the 70's/80's
I used to travel 8.5 miles by car and never missed a day at work (the spoiler pn my HS Chevette look a like propably helped though ::))

The locals in South Anston near Rotherham came to their rescue at the local church hall as driver after driver became stuck on the A57.

They are quite a decent bunch arround this way, used to work with a few of them from that area. But am sure no matter what part of the country they would have been helped out the same way in these conditions.

its nice to know that in some areas community spirit still lives on where i live with a few exceptions they wouldnt put you out if you was on fire :(

A 2.3 would have made it a faster snow plow. ;D ;D
Saying that it had all the stage 3 kit on it and never let me down.
