Title: Snow on the roof of your car
Post by: Nickbat on 02 December 2010, 12:36:12
I just read this comment posted elsewhere today:

Police will be stopping people from tomorrow who are driving with snow on the roof of their car and will issue fixed penalty of £60 + 3 points. It's in the highway code and was also on bbc radio 3!!

I assume it to be true.  :o :o

Yeah I heard about that, police are going to be hella busy if that's true.  Especially as ice often forms on the roof if the snow is left long enough between trips.

This has been an offence for some time Nick, as is anything that could cause danger to other motorists or yourself whilst driving.  The police consider it could fall into your vision area, distracting you and also other motorists.

This is the section of the Highway Code that covers this and the Police will use if necessary under the Road Traffic Act:

229

Before you set off

    * you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
    * you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
    * make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
    * remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
    * check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

[Laws CUR reg 30, RVLR reg 23, VERA sect 43 & RV(DRM)R reg 11]

 ;) ;)

Yep, there are a lot of them about! Incidentally I thought of you this morning (ooer) as I saw not one but two Omegas on my way to the M3 - one stuck waiting to go toward Ascot (champagne or silver saloon) and one as I was heading back toward Sainsbury (I forget what colour now) - and wondered if either of them were you ;)

Oddly enough, in the boot right now, I have:

One large stiff 24" wide broom.
One shovel.
One bag of cat litter.
Oh and the old car battery ;D

Might be a bit tricky guaranteeing compliance with that one? It suggests that if you go out in your car when the weather forecast says there's more snow on the way, you're breaking the law?

Unless they're not ALL law...... :-/

There are plenty of regulations enacted to deal with such exhibitions of bone idleness, carelessness and stupidity - the trouble is that they're rarely invoked by the constabulary.

So all the pious ones on here are saying that they've always taken every last grain of snow off the roof of our car when we've driven off, eh?

Hmm, OK. :-X

Incidentally, what does a disabled old lady do when she has to drive to the doctors early one morning and finds there's 1mm of snow on the roof? :-?

My bone of contention with this is not that people should be allowed to drive along with a huge slab of snow on their car, but "snow on the roof" is open to interpretation in terms of quantity and, of course, when such snow has an ice layer beneath it and frost on top, you'd be hard pressed to get it all off even with chisel!

£60 and 3 points seems excessively draconian, except that is, to all the saintly types who not only remove every last bit of snow, but also give the car a wash, wax and polish before setting off for work.  ;)

Heck no - it's impossible to get the last layer off without scraping it off the paint, anyway (er.. might help if I waxed the car more often I suppose  :-[ ) .. but I do at least make sure there's nothing likely to jump up and obscure my view when there's 6" of snow on the car ;) Quick brush with a soft broom does that..

I'm no angel, I'd never like to put myself across as one..

There is no endorseable offence of driving with snow on your car so presumably the Police would have to be of the opinion that it was serious enough to warrant a conviction for Driving without reasonable consideration for other road users or Dangerous driving.

I don't have a problem with that. If it's only a sprinkling of snow it won't be considered dangerous and won't attract an offence.

Does that include trucks with massive slabs of snow on the beds ::)
Also the massive slabs of ice/snow on articulated trailer roofs that fly off & hit those behind :(

i suspect that this is aimed purely at the muppets who just clear a peep hole in the windscreen.if this is really intended to make people totally clear there vehicles off snow then it will be a total pr disaster

It's not just snow, and not just on the roof either. Misted frosted windows, tom-toms, mirror ornaments, fog lights, wonky lights, blown bulbs, cheap light clusters that just flash randomly and independently, bike racks, roof racks wally body kits hanging off, lorry drivers darting to lane 2, middle lane nodders, people who refuse to pass a grittier lorry.....

Sure I've missed some.... Oh CARAVANS!  Bloody worst of all.  ;D

My friend is a retired senior fire-officer (Kent Fire Brigade) and related the story of attending a call to an RTA (several years ago) near the Dover Eastern Docks: where a motorcyclist had been beheaded by a thick sheet of 'clear-ice' falling from the roof of an artic-trailer.....when I`m behind them in cold weather it`s (now) always on my mind! :'(

i guess it is a good idea because with a huge slab of the stuff on your roof it moves the vehicles centre of gravity therefore making it top heavy...i guess it is aimed at 4 x 4 as they dont always fair very well in the elk test in their standard guise let alone with a slab of snow on the roof :y

Indeed TAM, it is amazing how many 4x4s I have seen on recent news clips about the weather that are on the sides or roofs.  Too many of their drivers think they are invincible when driving those, and the inevitable happens! ::) ::) ;)

Did you see the 4x4 on the BBC stuck across the country lane? One front wheel up one bank, one rear wheel up the other, at a 30* angle up on on end... I couldn't figure out how they got it so wrong..

And then I drove to work this morning (and home) and noticed the number of drivers who's only attempt at clearing a window was to turn the bl**dy windscreen wipers on. FFS.

I've been out on the piss all night and I could do a better job!

Always pleased to see yet another case of easy money from the motorist......Just hope they are going to fine themselves!!  Have seen a couple of poice cars where they have just cleared a tiny bit just so they can see out of the screen......What an example to set!!!!
