Title: Another car (4x4)
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 05 December 2010, 20:56:17
Been fancying something to let lose on the twisty's with for quite a while now,   Just  miss the days of driving through the seat of my pants (Driving like I stole it)  Few routes round here were I can see for miles and give it the beans when no one or anything is arround.

Only criteria I set myself was local, cheap and 4wd.

Looked on autotrader and ebay and basiciacly it's a choice between a 2.4 litre ford thing, a 3.3 subaru something or other or and  imprtza.

Dont want the old mans for thing as is too slow, the 3,3 Subaru is auto but looks interesting.  So looked into the pretzles on offer then came accross the write up on this one.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-SUBARU-IMPREZA-SILVER-/270673812148?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f056a9ab4

Then realsied they will have all been hammered within an inch of thier lives so only possibly worth buying one I can test fly (and yes it will get maxed everywhere)

So am back to the drawing board, think I have turned into to a 14 yearold wanna be Colin McRae

i scoffed at my friends k reg 104 xsi. I think it was only a 1.4. Then I actually drove it and I've never had so much fun. Revving the pants off it it's fairly nippy, I was laughing my head off! It seemed faster because it was so small and rough around the edges.

Daihatsu Copen is a fun little car, although not 4WD and not for a tall person! Sister in Law used to have one and it was great fun for a little 800cc :y :y

a bit of a 'girls car' though, especially with the roof back. Having said that I know a bloke with one & he's a definite man's man & bloody big too!

Had earmarked some cash looking for a nice 3.2 Estate late model low miles Elite etc.

So was gonna use some of that.

Originally no more than a grand, then when the cheap scubby showed up it got me thinking so upped ot to £1500 but quickly realised I might end up buying a money pit.

Pf all the FWD cars I have driven only 2 have left me with the thought of ever having annother and that was a 1000cc mini, it was just so much fun, and the other was a 1.9GTi 205 that was just rapid even though all FWD cars torque steer I would put up with either just for the fun elemnrt as it wont be a repalcemnrt for the Elite.

Just thought, the most impressive car was a FWD Honda Prelude with 4WS, that was wicked and a joy to drive.

Am tempted cem, but then am getting older and I would realy prefer a 400 trans am T Top.

Imprestza nice, but possible licence killer, and if I get a bad one then will cost a fortune.  Plus havent bothered going out since the snow fell, and if I did it would cost me £50 a day in fuel alone while snow was on the ground.  :-X

I dont think all scoobys have been thrashed to within an inch of their lives Skruntie. They are a very quick car, and it wouldnt be easy to do that unless it was used for a lot of track days.
Afaik they are very well built and can take some serious stick.
If you want to buy something that you can push to its limits on public roads, than imo its the wrong car. Simply because if your pushing a Scooby to its limits you will be going very quickly indeed, and would be in the realms of a spell at her maj,s pleasure if you get nicked. ;)

Totally agree with you on the Scooby, plus the it cant be tested, and wouldnt want to test a car with the timing out out (If that what he thiks it is)

Ford looks interesting, not a fan of them, but if it had been with in 25 miles od me I would have gone and had a look.

Fits the bill parformance wise, but not practical if compared to a Legnum VR4

Even one of the Sigma range had all the same kit IIRC

Different, if it were local I would have a test drive in that.

Down side is it's 18 years old and I hate white car's.  But as I said would consider looking at it.

Nice colour but the front looks a different shade to the back.

Dont think they are nearly as big inside as an Omega though.

If I were thinking of an old car to have some fun in, I would be hunting for a solid chevette hatchback shell and an old 2300 slant 4 engine. It would be cheapish/light/ 150 or so bhp/ rwd/and a lot of fun. A standard chevette HS was 1016 kgs. Could probably knock quite a few kilos off that with stripping out interior trim etc, so the car would weigh less than a tonne. :)
