Title: Terrier advice ?
Post by: omegod on 06 December 2010, 20:36:53
Anyone got experience of these little cuties, Patterdale terriers. Been persuading SWMBO for a while that we need a doggy and my 7 yr old daughter is desperate for one. Basically need a decent temprament and not too bonkers round the house?

Waddya reckon?

You need a Spaniel.

But I may be slightly biased!  ;D

A lovely characterful breed!......They`re renowned for being 'vocal' and digging/escaping.....and like all terriers they`re five times larger in the mind than in the body! ;)

Terriers ALWAYS need a 'boss' and something to do every day.

I`d contact the breed-club and/or a reputable breeder with a general inquiry about the breed`s temperament (esp. with regards to children and being left alone etc.)......All reputable breeders would welcome such a considered inquiry. :y

Patties have a lovely temperament as a general rule & are good with kids BUT they are bonkers around the house & as said need lots of attention & exercise or they become very 'vocal' ;)

agree with Debs totally but would add they just love being part of the family, will play all day if you let them, are prone to going deaf when on the "hunt" for the source of a nice "scent" make excellent guard dogs owing to the surprisingly loud bark from such a small body, can be very possesive of their human owners/mates!! :y

Yes they need a boss but that "Boss" must have alot of time for them. Loving & loyal but one of the worst for being left alone. :y

Which is a problem as we both work 9-5, I know this seems cruel but it's the harsh realities of working. Any suggestions as to which breed/cross would be better suited to cope with this?

Would you not be better holding off getting a dog in that case Ome? - just an observation, nothing judgemental. :y

Don't get any spaniels well not springers I had my house recked by mine when they was puppies and i only went to the shops for a while, the best dog i had was a cavalier kings charles spaniel and they don't bark and you can leave them and they are very good with kids, hope that info helps

Lab's make great pets...  very affectionate and loving, fairly docile and cute...

Indoors ours is happy lying in his bed or lying at the foot of the stairs...

We rescued ours at 5 1/2 years old, sadly, he was never properly socialised and as such isn't good with other dogs.  This was exaserbated by him being attacked by another dog shortly after we had him...

If you get a male dog, get it done, it will improve its temprement...

No offence taken and I understand your point, I have had dogs before that were fine on their own and to be honest the extra security would be a bonus but I don't want to wait until im 65 to get another dog Hmmmmm! will give it some more thought!

well we got two!!! and they kept each other company, had thier toybox full of toys while we were at work, and never had an issue with chewing or damage, even when the third one came along they all keep eachother company and dont get lonely while we are out,,
food for thought? :y
