Title: Fuel: 33.5 pence/litre
Post by: Debs. on 12 December 2010, 20:59:10
....prices from years gone bye?

No, ASDA prices for veggie-oil (pure-rapeseed) for the Disco; two, litre-size bottles for 67 pence....oh the joy!:y

My trolley looked like it was being used to clear-up after an explosion in a bottle factory ;D

The checkout lady looked quite bemused; she must have thought I have an oil fetish! ;)

When i drove my Rover 825D it had veg oil alot of the time. I too used to get very strange looks as i walked around with my trolley with 6 3 litre bottles in it ;D

Can you put this rapeseed oil straight in the tank? Can you use it with turbodiesels?

All depends on the pump.

I use a commercially available viscosity-modifier which also adds lubricity; so I simply mix it in a 20 litre jerry can before fueling the Discovery (which is a turbo-diesel)......but lieu of the additive, you can simply use  a mix of 50/50 veggie-oil and DERV. (simply mixed in the vehicle`s tank).

The caveat is: the engine`s diesel pump HAS to be suitable for SVO/PPO (pure plant/veggie oil or mixes thereof).....some cannot use ANY veggie proportions, others are fine at 50/50 ratios....some can go 100% veggie....You MUST check the type of metering pump and it`s suitability first.

There`s lots on t`internet about  veggie/bio fuelling....but, do research before trying anything; there could be expensive consequences if the engine and it`s fuel system are not suitable.:y

Nope - you are allowed a personal allowance (2500ltrs pa ??) with no duty payable. ;)
I might investigate this route for my next car. Very sick of being royally shafted jut to put fuel in the tank. >:(

Thanks Debs, very informative! :)

I heard about that, I thought about getting a cheap small diesel and running it on veg oil for a year to see how cheap I could motor for. Couldn't face selling the migs though, and can't run three cars!

No, not unless you use more than 2500 litres/year.....it`s all perfectly legal for road use; the government signed upto the Kyoto agreement and have to encourage bio-fuel usage.
Dutiable only for commercial resale and/or >2500 l/year.:y

Because I live in a very cold mountain area; I bought a coolant-heated fuel filter housing to ensure the veggie is kept as thin as possible, it came from a Peugeot diesel estate car (in the scrapyard) £5..... and a couple of pounds for some jubilee clips and heater-hose......a 20 litre (metal) jerry can £10....and the viscosity/lubricity additive £11./litre (of which; 1 litre treats 500 litres of veggie-oil)
...not exactly an expensive conversion! ;)

Far-less visible-soot (particulates); even uphill when 'lugging'......I think I`m getting ever-so slightly more MPG on veggie and there is a VERY obvious 'frying' odour to the exhaust; not in a bad way, but very different from the aroma of DERV......To be honest, I`ve never liked the small of burnt DERV; and veggie has a more pleasant/lighter smell to it.

Common Rail diesels are a universal 'no-no' for use with veggie...so, it tends to the the 'old technology' metered-pump DI engines that make for the best miser-option. :y
