Title: Christmas day, which shall we have?
Post by: Varche on 11 December 2010, 21:58:25
Choice of three types of birds for the Varche household this year. Didn't bother with turkey as they get blackhead. Can't buy frozen turkeys or even frozen chickens.

Which do you reckon?

neither of us are big turkey fans (plus theres only 2 of us and it'd be a massive waste), we usually get a nice duck all the usual trimmings with a plum sauce mixed with the juice from the duck instead of gravy.....lovely  :y

Glad to hear i'm not the only one who does'nt rate roast turkey. Unless you spend more time prepping than cooking it it's tough & has little taste. I understand it's good for those who have to feed many though. A pheasant is nice but you need one each, a ham or gammon joint always goes down well & a good leg of lamb is a must.
Our local butcher has been in the same hands since the 60's (man)! & make all thier own game & the best pork pies outside Melton Mowbray so i usually indulge & can feed passing intruders....sorry visitors!..Oh & a haggis always goes down well with lots of mash & a light gravy...YUM!!!! :P

We're having beef wellington. :-*

I too think Turkey is a little bland. More so the left overs than the Christmas dinner, IMHO.

Had goose a couple of years back. That was nice. Kept us in fat for the roast potatoes for ages too. :-*

I'm not a fan of turkey either so we always have a small crown and a pork crackling joint. I normally boil a gammon joint xmas eve too which does about 3 days of sandwiches and a meal. Gammon, boiled tatties, broad beans and parsley sauce yummy!

I love roast turkey, lots of bacon on it, stuffed with stuffing and sausage meat and cooked breast down.

Tasty, moist, lovely!

Must admit it sounds good but do you eat it more than once a year?

No but, i guess that what makes it a bit more special.

The secret is the breast down bit, all the juices and flavour flows into the breast, tastes so much better and does not dry out.  ;D :y
