Title: Lies, damned lies and statistics

Did we not have rather a lot of snow and ice earlier this year. And I don't recal a blistering summer either.

I think you've confused "the world" with "your garden"  :y

you're welcome  ;)

Actually no. "It says the past 12 months are the warmest recorded by Nasa, and are second in the UK data set, HadCRUT3."

This is the most laughable bit. "Within the bounds of statistical error, "

::)It`s one of those 'climate' versus 'weather' stories........IMO: the latter is what causes us all the trouble. ;)

I mostly blame the sun of man - but also many of those righteous individuals/corporations and governments who preach the gospel of carbon restraint while carrying merrily on, insisting they're doing a great job, by buying carbon credits in a bid to lessen their collective responsibility for helping this evil destroy our planet.

We did have a warm, and often sunny, summer in the south east for long periods with it remaining at least mild for some time until recently.  However, in my mind it did never count as a "scoucher" like 1976! ::) ::) ::)

It's interesting how different people have different takes on the weather.  My mother keeps complaining that we've had a lousy summer (she is in the early stages of dementia at 91) but having scarified the lawn just before the rainless season started, I am painfully aware that we had a long and hot summer.  Both my mum and I were watering our grass (green or yellow stuff that kids roll around on  ;D) and I had to re-seed some of mine.

So, yes, not as hot as 1976 but pretty hot in my opinion.

[edit]I suppose it's not obvious that my mother lives 1/4 mile from me.[/edit]

Lizzie and Chris, you must have had a much better summer than we had. Our grass grew massively, combination of rain and sun. Never once did it show any sign of turning brown. In fact my grape vine had it's best year ever this year. And the apples we have had are many and large.

;D ;D Sorry, I couldn't resist!

And that's true, we did have rather a lot of the white stuff in February .. enough to last me a few years, I reckon! I'd rather not have another 6hr drive to get home :)

Oh and my grass died a death in summer, too - most of it turned brown and only half of it came back to life :( Doesn't help that there's a hurfing great Oak tree in the back garden and a hurfing great pine tree that probably suck up all the water.

Yes, I think it is true that the south east quarter had a far better summer than many other parts of the country.  I remember thinking at the time that we were being very lucky, constantly missing the rain belts that came across parts of the north and west, through to the Southampton area in the south.  Other people I have spoken to down here thought the same way. ;)

Agreed, we did have a few weeks in June but the school summer holidays were very poor up here..... :(

I wish it would bloody hurry up! There's 3" of snow on the car since 9-o' clock & it is still coming down like there's no tomorrow! :(

Thought I would bring this back to the top. Just wondering if the MET office is still predicting 2010 to be one of the hottest years. With all the snow and record cold temparatures  ;D

Crikey, of course they will  predict this and they will produce the "numbers" to prove it. The only snag is, that they are talking in terms of hundredths and tenths of a degree, averaged out, with large areas of the planet not covered and missing station data guesstimated. Of course the other snag is that over the last few decades, an increasing number of weather stations have been sited, or have grown up in, urban sites. The trouble with that is that NASA now reckons that this so-called "Urban Heat Island" effect can be up to 9 full degrees celcius! So how can this average of averages (day & nght) of widely-differing station data be of much use when trying to work out a trend to two decimal places. As someone once said, the "average" temperature on earth is as meaningful as the average number in a phone book.  ;)

Oh, and you mustn't confuse weather and climate. It's only climate when it's hot weather. hen it's cold, it's just weather. OK?  ;) ;D ;D

2010 has been the hottest year on record hasn't it? don't get confused by the cold weather - that's my advice.

Nickbat agrees  :y

Funnily enough we where talking about this at work. And I cannot think of the last time we got snow twice in the same year, I mean the beginning and end of the same year. I realise we do not get the white as often as you chaps up north, but I cannot recall in my lifetime this happening (I am 45) I do remember very cold winters in the mid to late 70s
