Agreed. I use to be in the forces and have respect for certain elements. To call Iraq and Afghanistan 'wars' compared the WW1 and WW2 is a misnomer IMO, despite the fact I was constantly attacked, mortared, shot at and stoned and was in other unfortunate events.
To now get so called celebrities involved in one night of 'paying respect to the forces' is a more of an insult. It's bit late anyway. I have much more respect for the 18yo infantier than any celebrity, who IMO only shows their face for their own ends when it comes to things like this.
Take the X-factor finalists 'Hero' song or whatever it was called. An absolute insult to the good men and women. It was said that it was for the forces. It was written by Mariah Carey with no such intention, then chosen by money obsessed marketing men for fame hungry wannabees to get their face on tv and make money. They just used the cause for their own ends. By their own admission.
I think these sort of shows are there for the benefit of certain people who want to ease their conscience.
But, that said, respect to the forces.

I saw only just a few mins of presentation given to the soldier of the light infantry, but in that time my thoughts were was what will he be doing tomorrow as the show was just for tonight.
in a few years all will be hazy memory and everyone will be more concerned about there own live's just as now considering the ultimate sacrifice that was made. when a soldier no choice is given which theatre you are to fight nad many did not ask or expected when they joint they will be sent to Afghanistan.
Older service men and women say there is nothing good in wars and would not like to experience it again.
There are many parasites out there regardless of birth who prefer to take other peoples hard earned money and would not care one bit what our service men and women have to face ;)

I don't think it's fair to say that. If you join any of our armed forces, there should be a reasonable expectation in your head that you could be sent to a place of conflict, which owing to the nature of the world, you will have no say over where or when you go.

I joined to serve and relish each and every opportunity to serve wherever and whenever i am needed to support the combat arms.
I still remember to this day the look on my boss' face when I told him I was quitting tojoin the army (2 weeks after the invaision of iraq) Some people dont understand it but I didn't join to sit on my arse behind a desk, I would rather be out there doing my part :y

Exactly Guffer! Being on tour was brilliant! It's like a 'GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Morning Vietnam' moment all the time! Of course it wasn't without its bad points but my time in Iraq was one of the best periods of my life! Not wanting to sound full of bravardo, but it's such a buzz when you get contacted!

I agree with most of what has really been said, and certainly I strongly object to two words being put together in a sentence;
celebrity, hero!! :o :o >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
No celebrity can possibly stand side by side with the modern day military heroes, let alone those of past conflicts, especially the two World Wars! My Uncle Wally will be spinning in his unknown grave somewhere at Ypres, as my Grandfather will in his 1940 resting place! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Celebrities by all means raise money, much of it, for medical treatment and aftercare for years to come for those both shattered by mental and physical injury. But how dare they make a show of it on television! >:( >:( >:( >:(
I have more respect for our military than to watch such self satisfying and congratulating rubbish by tv and celebrity "personalities" who want to be seen to be doing good and making a "good show"! >:( >:(
If we want our country not to be so mediocre, then this is what we have to rid ourselves of! Lets just have our brave troops marching through as many towns as possible when they return.
God bless and protect them.

I think Clarkson was alluding to these type of concerns when he presented an award to an injured serviceman. I cant remember the exact wording but it was something like- " you dont just deserve this award, you deserve to have us take care of you for the rest of your life". Nail on head imo.

It's a lot of ballicks in my view.
We don't need a lot of self-serving celebrities bearing their well upholstered arses or beating artificially enhanced bosoms in questionable concern for those who do the duty that this nation demands.
We simply need the establishment to look after those - who have faced these dangers by doing their duty – without question or penny-pinching.
Meanwhile those of us who fight or have fought the dirty-war prefer to look after our own - without help from those deemed to be from the 'celebrated' sector of our nation.

Thanks, but I wasn't looking for praise, in fact i get embarassed getting it because I am not front line and at the end of the day I am doing a job I love so why get praise? I was ust trying to add to the comment made by Geoffr70 :y
