Title: Yet another PC problem

Old one made out of bits, powers off after a few seconds, anywhere from still during video card ram count to logging in.

An electrical noise then shuts down.

Have to unplug to get any response.

Have been running cover off and it seems OK.

Tree in way stops this.

What is most likely fault?

I am personally thinking PSU.

yup, sounds like PSU problem. Ohh get a Mac  :P

Swap out the psu and see if it cures it. Seemples.

Does sound like the PSU but failing that check the fans are starting reliably and nothing is getting in their way once the case is on.

I'll have a look for the old PSU tomorrow - not sure if in garage or loft.

Loft is no fun with my toe.

CUrrent PSU belongs with the case - my old work PC with my old home PC insides except power supply.

Often you find the power supply is full of cheap and nasty electrolytics and the ones on the +5SB rail fail because they're always on 24/7.

PC won't normally turn on unless the motherboard has standby 5v power.

try resetting the bios as well (remove power and battery for 1 min should reset the cmos) failing that it could be the psu or the cpu could be getting an over heat warning and shutting down so reseating the heat sink could resolve it
