Title: tipping (at a restaurant)
Post by: Andy B on 18 December 2010, 19:17:09
My daughter works at a local Pizza Express. There was a party of 50 in there last night which I would think would require a fair bit of effort to keep them topped up with drinks etc, so at the end of their meal, the bill came to over £1000 - not too difficult to get that much, around £20 each. The party of middle aged women then ask for the service charge  to be remove which often happens & is perfectly acceptable, no gripe there, in general the girls prefer it cos they're more likely to be tipped cos it won't then be going through the till.
The tip they then left was .....................

the equivalent of 10p each!
A miserable £5 from a table/group of 50

and no, it wasn't my daughter that waited on the table.

Miserable and ungrateful shower!......there`s MUCH more work in serving a table-party! :(

I leave 10-15%, or if I`ve received excellent/attentive service; 20%. :y

tips are optional, not a right...

but even so - the tight-a**ed bar stewards.

UNLESS...
the group were unhappy with the service?

I once went to a restaurant and had bad service - a hair in my food (which was substituted, without apology), wrong drinks served, other minor niggles which just amounted to lack of care.

I left a penny as a tip - cos I thougt it was more insulting than leaving nothing.

I did take the matter up with the manager, so it's not like the staff didn't know why, however.

The problem is, in a large group, there's normally a miserable sod who won't just split it 50 ways and add 15%, but who carps on about how he had 3 beers and someone else had 4. >:(

I suspect that's why they normally add the service charge to the bill for large groups. ;)

I'll always tip a flat rate 15%, more if the service is good. :y

Yes, that's one way they do it.

In an unfamiliar place I always ask beforehand if I can strike the service charge or cover charge (if one is applied), if not I leave.

Sometimes the staff do not get the full benefit from any service charge (or TRONC) so I prefer to reward good service by giving the tip to those who earned it.

Front of house staff should aggregate the tips they receive so the kitchen can also benefit- although this is not always done.

That's why Emily and the rest of the staff prefer it not going through the till.

I'll have to ask her about that.  :-/

Hmm, most of the restaurants round here, including the curry house, service is included. Which makes life easier for the customer IMO. But on the other hand if the service is poor or, as I suspect, the waiting staff don't get the tips I would prefer to tip to the level I see fit directly in cash, if I have any.

Wasn't aware re removing the service charge though. It does imply an assumption that the service will be good, not always the case, although they're very good at our favourites.

But yes does seem tight on such a large table. :-/
