Title: Silly Question Time - SMS Messages
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 21 December 2010, 02:37:29
Where are text messages stored on a phone when they arrive..

On the SIM Card.
Phone built in memory
Memory card.

Same with Phone contacts.

Phone is a Samsung Toca Lite.  Need to get the contact details and some Text messages off.  Hence the question where are they stored, and do these phones come with software as standard and can the messages and contacts be set up to SYNC to a computer for backup regardles of where they are stored on the phone.

Been offered a phone but seller wants to copy all the messages for definate and hopefully the contact list.

On Nokia phones I know the Contact details can be copied from the SIM to the phone.  This will be done as precaution incase they are not readable in thier new phone.  (Like it did when I got my Nokia 6600 and took the SIM card out of my 3210i :-X)

TIA.   :y

hi
on the samsung tocca i think this is the way to transfer contact details and sms
·         Phone to Phone:
Use the Move option in ‘My files’, i.e. Manage -> Move -> Memory card

·         PC to Phone:
Connect the handset to NPS (New PC Studio), with either USB cord or Bluetooth dongle.
Select the ‘PC’ icon & phones in NPS -> browse files & target folder -> drag files and drop to the folder.
never done it myself but that is what manual says  ::)

I'm pretty sure that mobile phones store SMS in their internal memory.  the best way to transfer them maybe to snyc using Outlook as I doubt the sim card will have enough memory even if it could handle sms messages :y

If you look on download.com there are a couple of apps that might be of assistance  :y

Internal memory but, most phones will back them up to a PC (with some supporting backup to a memory card)

texts yes, contacts is a different question.

Contacts can be stored on both (normaly phone with auto copy to SIM although this is setable)

Beware thoguh, the advanced contact detail (pics, specific ringtones, email addresses etc) is not supported by the SIM so you get a subset of the contact info stored.

As others have said, except for very early GSM phones that were SMS capable, SMS are stored on phone.

Yep, they did have an SMS store on the SIM in the early days.

People find an inbox of 5 messages restrictive these days.  ;)

You might still be able to transfer a handful to the SIM to keep them. Failing that send them to another phone using IRDA / bluetooth or transfer them to your PC using the phone's bundled software, as said.

We developed test cases which test the mobile's correct handling of a SMS store full condition. They get a bit long winded these days when you need to send hundreds of SMSs before the phone starts to complain. If it hasn't got a way to delete them in bulk you might as well bin the phone it afterwards too. ;D

Can/could the texts be retrieved though.
