All OK then, no harm?

She will want the miggy back... ;)
Title: Re: Terrible news.
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 15 May 2007, 21:43:46
She had the miggy all along......in fact since the Fiart was purchased hes been the only one to drive it!

Some bruising, dented pride and 1 Kg of wasted aircon gas.....plus the Fiart can now return to Italy to made made into what it should always have been.....a washing machine.....

It sounds like a steering component failure to me.....

Sounds like the Fiat was safe at least.  A Saxo and another POS were racing near here the other day.  One must have nudged the other, both went off and hit different trees.  Both dead.  :(

Same here. Two racers side by side in a 20 zone. 1 went up the banking and landed 10 feet away. Driver dead. Passenger walked away.  Police stopped me on my bike until road cleared.

Dave - scary but you walked away, again.  What's next a Volvo ? :-/

But with your recent record I have broken the gearbox.

I was lucky, very lucky. I am bruised sore and seriously  :-Xed off! but it could have been so much worse.

Having spoken with Laidback shortly after this happened, I can say he is putting on a brave face. he sounded uncharacteristically shaken and it takes a lot to do that to my mate!

From the sound of things I think Dave and I have the same theory about what has gone wrong. If so, this will be very interesting.

Again, I am really glad you are OK mate. Give me a call later and let me know if you need anything. :y

I have spoken with Dave this morning again. TBH, he doesn't sound his normal cheerful self at all. I can tell this has been a BIG shock to him. He is OK, but very shaken by the sound of it.

I won't give too much away here because Dave may not want me to. But I will confirm that this was the Fiat coupe he had bought for Mrs Laidback. BOTH airbags deployed. By all accounts I think he is lucky to escape with the minor injuries he has. Could have been an awful lot worse and I think that his experience behind the wheel may have given him the split second he needed to avoid this being a fatality!

In case anyone is wondering, no he didn't cause it. The cause is yet to be established, but it would seem that a major mechanical/structural failure may be to blame. The car is a total loss and is well beyond repair by any stretch of the imagination.

Hope you get it all sorted ok soon and not too sore.
Cant be good news, you have only had it a few weeks, I hope it was safe when bought!  If not, are there legal implications for the seller?
It must be bad if even Ronnie thinks it is beyond repair!

I'm so sorry to hear that. Glad you are OK Dave.
Mark i think it is a bit silly to critisize the Fiat it was a used car after all and you don't know what treatment it had in the past. It can happen to any car so it is better not to generalise. There 1000nd of happy coupe owners out there.

Dont read into a statement something that is not there Kostas.....which is what you are doing!

I made the statement that it needs to be a major component failure and the car has had recent work.......

Well, I have seen the car up close and personal today. All I can say is Oh My God! It is absolutely wrecked. Mainly the front left corner, but it has taken the chasis leg back a good 6" and the windscreen and the A'post' and the roof has buckled. Absolutely not repiarable in a month of Sundays.

The very nice recovery man dumped in on his driveway facing outwards, so Dave and I turned it around. Now, this is no small challenge when the NSF wheel has absolutely no clearance from the oil cooler and wing and the engine not quite working  ::). Anyway, after a few shunts we managed it. I know we are both going to regret that tomorrow - my back is already saying... 'Oh you think so do you?'

Dave took some interesting pics today and may or may not wish to share them with us later.

I can say that whilst putting on a brave front, he is a bit bashed up and has taken a fair whack judging by the bruises and cuts. Looks like he has done a couple of rounds with mike Tyson - in a bulldozer.

Having met with the car today I am genuinely amazed that he walked away with the minor injuries that he did. This was by far the nastiest one we have had in the forum so far and I wish Dave a speedy recovery and all the help I can give, whenever he needs it.

I am sure I speak for everyone here when I wish him sincere wishes to get better as quickly as possible.

Here's a sobering one. I rolled a Rover on the M40, must've rolled maybe twice, three times. When it stopped, I turned to ask my then wife and daughter if they were ok, and..they'd gone! Through the back window. I've never felt so many different emotions at once. I was crying like a baby.

Mercifully they were both ok, but a real shocker I can tell you.

Sorry to steal your thunder Dave, but that was much more exciting than your "bump" :P

Aye, a mates missus had just left home and the police think was putting her belt whilst going along. Had an accident (whether due to struggling with belt or not was never established), half thrown out, and killed :(

Does make you think, as I reckon we all do it sometimes...

An aquaintance.

"Why don't you remove the rear seat belts the car is old enough?"

Me
" I put them in >:("

Similar time, driving from a pub at a fast speed with two friends in the car, about 00:00 roughly they were both a bit sozzled this is back in 90 91 92 or so.

I was pulled, the Police looked in saw 2 drunks and a driver. Saw that back seat drunk had a seat belt on in a 1978 car and waved us on!

They need to see some pics of the aftermath of a road accident where the occupants were not wearing seat belts.........its not pleasent at all and equally not nice for those having to sweep up.

I think the only person who would benefit is the coroner.....as he has fewer cuts to make!

What they also need to know is the coroner may not have enough worthy of making a cut!

Friend of mine he was 19 8 years ago coming back from a night club a bit drunk, he fell asleep went of the road with very small speed and the car tipped over, he(RIP) with no seatbelt the door opened his head was levered between the sideskirt and the gravel, instant death. TRAGIC. In 3 miliseconds the passive safety systems on a modern car deploy to save your life. I don't know anyone that has the reflexes or the strength to keep his mass*11*0.98.
I'm glad Dave you are one of those that wear the seatbelt!

I play golf with him occasionally, if we travel in my car I insist he wears a seat belt.

If we travel in his car, unfortunately I have no control.

If he see's a police car, he tucks his right arm through the seat belt, to make it look as though he's wearing it

Seen and heard the various arguments both for and against, alongwith the wonderous 'escape' stories - "if I was wearing my belt, I would be stood here speaking to you as a dead man" type things.

Seen too much blood, snot, tears and bits over the years, all of which convince me not to travel in a car (or bus) without wearing one.

Just glad your still here to talk about the whole thing, Dave.  Cars are just expensive tin and all that.  Blood and snot is harder to replace...   :y
