Faced with an urge to get out of the house on New year's day I decided to check out the classic car meet at the Brooklands museum...
Can't really appreciate the scale of it from these photos but I've brought back a couple for Guy ;) and the first car I came across after walking through the gate... An Opel GT :-*

Then, yesterday, a visit to an old preserved waterworks at Twyford near Winchester. Very interesting collection of steam, diesel and electric pumping plant with the unique addition of a softening plant complete with lime quarry, kilns and a little railway to ferry the lime and coal around.
Around the turn of the century this was supplying Southampton and the visiting cruise liners which demanded soft water, so it was softened at source.
A nice first outing for the Westfield for 2011 (which went better than 2010's). :-X

There's some lovely stuff there Kevin.
More than a handful of Scimitar GTEs. I wonder what they look like under the plastic? ;D
Time well spent I would say.
Thank you for sharing.

Those pictures of the cars are great Kevin, and really remind me of earlier days. The Mk1 Escort, which appears to be of the Sport or Mexico variety in particular recalled my days with my first brand new company car, a Mk1, L reg, Escort.
As for the pumping house, water treatment plant Kevin, it shows you have the same passion for history as me. The connection with the great transatlantic liners in particular is a fascinating link, that for me leads on to the great boat trains that fed those liners with their passengers. Also the first class passengers in their grand Edwardian, and later 1950s glamour clothes, arriving in their cars with mounds of luggage. All would be fed on the ship by the tons of produce loaded over the preceding days, and the gallons of water piped on from that water softening plant!!
Everything links perfectly, within an historic picture, that I could add to for hours, of grander times ;) ;)

I'm wondering if this could be the very rare Escort twin cam......or possibly the later RS1600 Lizzie... :y

Great pictures, Kevin! I adore the Opel GT and the old Celica (they used to have a stand every year at JAE, which always stood out amongst the sea of modern Japanese metal, for me).. very nice :)

They were something so many male friends wanted, and so did some of us women! :-* :-* :-*
When I was in my twenties Millwall somehow Ford's were the cars to have and I loved my Cortina's, but if I could have got my hands on an Escort Mk1 RS1600, RS2000, or Mexico I would have been in motoring Cloud 9! ;D ;D ;D ;)
They sometimes had problems with build quality, but what car didn't at the time?! ::) ::) ::) ::)

Indeed. I'm a bit gutted that I was unable to get any decent shots of the lovely triple expansion steam engine that they had. :-* it was a bit tight in the engine house and surrounded by people most of the time. Time to invest in that 10-24mm lens I've been promising myself, perhaps? ::)
They reckoned that the steam engine was no less efficient than the electric pumps that have replaced it, but they did away with the staff, of course. A staff in shifts of 8 used to run the place. It must have been hard work when you think of the jobs to do:
1) oiling and running the steam engine
2) Stoking the boilers
3) Mining the lime and transferring it and the coke up an inclined plane to the kilns
4) Filling, firing and emptying the lime kilns to make quick lime.
5) Mixing the quick lime into slaked lime to feed the softening tanks
6) Periodically draining the softening tank, digging out the chalk slurry and refilling.
.. and that's just when things were going to plan.
They earned their living, I bet.

I must admit I loved the V8 Moggie Minor. [smiley=evil.gif]
The conversion had a proper little plate in the engine bay (I'll see if I've got a picture of it). Converted by "Frank 'n' Stein Conversions" 1968 IIRC. ;D
